Default Did they ever put the ls6 in the camaro.

I just bought a 2002 z28 in january. The previously owner told me that the car had an ls6 engine in it. He said that it was original to the car. Which at the time i didnt care if it had that motor or not. I have read a little on it and from what i can tell up to like 10% of the cars had the ls6 motor in it. That may not be the exactly number but something like that. How can u tell if it has the ls6 motor? I have read that on the back of the block the serial numbers states if it a ls6. Anyone know the code for the ls6 motor? Is this the only way to tell? How can u get to the numbers even to read it? Is it on the driver side or passenger side? Also what kind of heads was on the ls6 motor? Everyone is always talking about the 243 and/or 799 head, what kind of vehicle came with those heads? I am new to this and just want to learn. thanks

LS6 Engine came with 243 heads. SOME LS1's actually have the LS6 block but with the LS1 heads "241" 2001+ LS1 cars also got the LS6 Intake. No Factory LS6 "Engines" came with the F-Body's as far as I know, even the LE ZL1's actually had the C5R block so that wouldn't be an LS6 either... The Z06 was the first to get the LS6, the CTS-V also got it. So those would be the 243's on the Z06 which have sodium filled valves unlike other 243's or the 799's....

LS6 Block gains ZERO gain as far as HP over the LS1 block... It's all in the Heads and Cam. The LS6 engine typically dyno's from 350-370 rwhp the ls1 from 290-320. that's in stock trim...

And I thought I said that the LS1's had the 241 heads and the LS6 has the 243 heads..... Maybe I forgot how to read?? LOL

In all fairness, they did produce some 2003 GTO's....LOL.....typo or not!! It just wasn't something you could actually buy!! LOL Just like there are some 2007 Camaros....funny thing is though they all seem to have "Concept" in the name ....whatever that means LOL and to add further "WTF's" on top of this..

I believe you are correct on all counts sir.
IIRC about 10% of the '01 LS1 F-bodies and about 25% of the '02 cars got the LS6 block. It was just for supply reasons.

if you take the vin number to a dealer will it tell you exactly what motor, gears, etc.... that your car is equipped with?

Yes, you did quite well with your information there sir..!!! However, your dyno numbers of 350-370rwhp might be a little high for our f-bodies. I have seen those numbers in all of my own google searches. I believe the vette's have better flowing stock manifolds along with less restrictive exhaust. This of course would be running through the m-6 trans. All of this really isn't relative because who keeps their cars exhaust stock anyways......right!!! I have a crate LS6 in my 02Z and it really is a monster in stock form. I only have the SLP CAI, JBA shorties, Magnaflow high flow direct fit cats, and Magnaflow out the back.....just to help it breath. It idle's at 500rpms and its a Rush at every freeway on ramp...yikes. Here is the link for the factory concept prototype that was never brought to the market. I believe these cars were brought to the market after production ended and were never sold through a dealership, but I could be wrong.

well my 350-370hp was for the LS6 engine, not for the LS1 engine....Basically referring to the Z06 Corvette...

the ls6 block is worth a couple more hp,the windows cast into the lower section of the block help equalize the crankcase pressure.
