If you are talking about putting a ls6 cam in the "500+ hp" car and looking to INCREASE power think again. Sounds like it needs a tune, you would be suprised what a good tuner can do.

Its been about 4 years since I have worked on the top end of an LS1. I forgot the size. So I did it with an 8mm since a 10mm would probably spin on it before mushrooming.

Glad I found this thread I've also been thinking about the LS6 cam. The general impression I'm getting is that the power increase from LS1 to LS6 cam is negligible. For like 250 bucks though, for the money it doesn't seem like a terrible choice. I've been told it's a mild enough cam not to have to replace springs and pushrods. Any other cam combos and already looking at $600+. I've heard a couple people on here mention the LS6 cam is good on top end for turbos, but what about spray? I'm trying to do this thing on somewhat of a budget, but not ghetto rigged and dangerous. Anyway, as a mild mannered power adder, is the LS6 cam swap worth it or not? I know there are better cams, that's not my point. I'm looking for a balance of power and price.

You should be able to find an LS6 cam for less the $200. Regardless, you should still upgrade to LS6 springs. If you're going to do that you can find slightly bigger used cams (that will work with the same springs) for similar money, yet more gains.

I dont trust my buddy who is helping me to tell me the truth on what Im looking for! he's that guy that will have me build another of my barley streetable car, cause thats how he is. there is a S 2000 with a big turbo that I want to eat some of my N/A rubber. and summit is 3 mi away from me.
For $325 delivered I would sell you my 228/228 563/576 on a 114 cam & pushrods. The cam can be heard but is not a big loppy cam.

My car went 12.2 with a 2.0+ 60' (soft launch because of the stock rear). I do have a couple other things on my car but this cam would put you in the 12s easily.

Good Luck.

$200 for an LS6 cam is a ripoff. Those should be $100 or less - check the for sale section or the vette board. I actually sold mine for $75 with 28K miles on it.

LS6 cams are nice cams to have around specially if you are boosting. N/A there are more cams out there that would do a better job. Reliability has a lot to do with two things, your set up and your tune.

Good Luck

You got ripped off. They easily go for $150-$200. People see it as a way to get 15 or so more rwhp and not have to tune it to get it to run.

Whatever you say but when I sold mine last summer I specifically looked at several others here in the for sale section at the time and most were around $100 used. I didn't feel like shipping it so I gave a local f-bod guy a deal for $75. I just don't see the point paying $200 for a used LS6 cam when you can buy whatever cam you want new for around $375 that will far outperform that cam. To me if you're going to tear it down and do a cam swap you might as well do it once and be done. We all get used to our current power level and want more later.

It's popular with the 5.3 truck guys too. Where they can get more power without having to buy a stall and all the **** that goes along with that. $200 and a days work for 15 hp isn't bad at all.

I sold mine for $200 and bought a TR224 to replace it for the same money.

you'll be wise to upgrade your pushrods (not used), seats and seals for the springs, the actual springs (not used), oil pump, timing chain (ls2), crank bolt. Then buy coolant and oil and oil filter. It's way too much money to not go buy a bigger cam.

Get my cam, i got a tsp228r, it doesn't require tuning, i've daily driven the car for 20k miles (i now have close to 90k), is EXTREMELY drivable, makes great power, and doesn't require tuning!! and we're talking or so 170 extra ($380 total).

sorry but i love this cam and i feel it's exactly what you're looking for.... with ported heads you'd for sure pick up the power you want

i had an 02 LS6 cam for a few yrs. all i had changed was my springs and i was fine. i did need a tune though. my car made descent power and was very streetable. if youre looking for alot of power id go with something more agressive. i like to hear my cam and an ls6 cam was hardly noticeable.

i ended up selling it for $100.

Where did it say the 228r didn't require tuning? You're fooling yourself if you dont think a tune would be extremely beneficial.
