Default LS1 efi vs carb

There are always lots of question, especially from older guys, to use carbs.

-Which is best carb or EFI?

-Which makes more power?

-I am scared of EFI or go with carb?

-I want to keep it simple ?.

-It's cheaper?

i personally had rather have efi. but if simpler tunability is what you after then i guess you could go carb. thats assuming your great at tuning carbs and timing curves. if your not experienced with carbs and ignition, then theirs a learning curve either way and that would make me go for efi and hp tuners. bare in mind that this is all imho, but if carbs were the better way then they would still be coming that way from the factory. just my 2 cents worth.

If you are asking for advice, we'll need more info on the motor/car and what your plans are for it.

1.I went with carb. Definitely easier for me being an older person. Great throttle respnse but not as good of gas mileage.

2.They have done several dyno tests. Efi comes out on top when it comes to torque. carb comes out on top in the horsepower wars but it depends on the tune

3.Tuning is more critical on efi and good tuners are not a dime a dozen.

4.Yes it is simple. But if you go with the msdls box you still have to download info off their website to adjust hi rpm limit(preset at 5500) as well as timing graphs.

5.To me, maybe, but when it comes to making changes it's cheaper to go carb because of not having to go to someone and pay more money to match the tune to your upgrades.

Do you already know how to tune either one?

Go with whatever you already know since its a weekend car.

If you are going to run a carb then you just need the MSD 6010 box

carbs seem to need more timing, also. 28 total doesn't seen to be enough.

Horsepower TV did a carb conversion on an LS1 awhile back. high rise manifold, 750 cfm carb, roller cam (i think), a distributor from a ford 302. the engine made 490 hp

I've got a setup close to yours(mine is a 346) and it's currently at 34* with 4* of advance I think. I'm still playing with it though

They say they don't like more then 29 with a carb but one guy who runs a 454 lsx and ported l92's runs 36 total advance. He goes 9.4's when the da is right all motor.

I'm gonna try and cut it down to about 32 total and see how it does

Red face

A carb setup is definatly simpler. I have a 750 holley on my car. Msd makes a box that hooks up to the stock coil packs and pics up the cam and crank triggers. It has different timing chips that u can plug in. Or u can make a custom timing curve. Also has a 2 step rev limeter. Any other questions plz ask and i'd be happy to answer
