Default Which motor to build

I am going to put a new motor in my 01 SS

I have done a lot of research into a 408 and a 383 and honestly I cant decide

I will be deploying to Iraq in the next few months and I will have money to build the car all the way (turbo 400, 9in, forced induction ect.)

I know that there is no replacement for displacement and the 408 will have more potential, but i'm still having problems justifying the difference in power between the two...

decide what kind of power you're looking to make. basically with a 383 your power cap NA is around 500 hp. with a 408 your power will START at about 500 NA. it all changes with forced induction. just decide what numbers you want and it'll be easier to decide what route to take.

Do you mind having a iron block in the car? If not I would go with a 370ci (6.0L) with a stock stroke. Save the extra 1,000 on a stroker crank for something else (fuel system, trans, rear ect...) You can make 700+ rwhp with a 370ci and 12-15#'s of boost.

An iron block is something that I have no problem with. I would just use an LQ9 block then build from there...

I should have posted that my goal is between 750-850 rwhp. Also I feel a procharger in my future. So could the stock crank in the 370 hold that much power or would it be better to just go ahead and do it all the way?

it could handle the power but i think if you have the funds i would go ahead and put the good stuff through out. not just pistons and rods. go all the way. there has been known to have 1000 hp on stock ls1 crank...not sure how long but i dont think i would try it.

Personally I would stick with your factory block and just spend your money on the heads and intake and forged components and do it right. Lots of people have gotten way over 500 rwhp with a 383. Its not too hard. I wouldn't replace the block unless its broken... You can boost the 383 and make same numbers as the 402/8. The only benefit of upping the cubes would be 4" bore and larger heads, but if your 3.9 bore combo is put together properly with attention to detail you can make similar numbers just as easy.

Is there any problems with the ls1 block as far as making seriouse hp numbers...I have a buddy with a 408 and he is constantly running around telling me that the block will be a weak spot when if i build it.

I would personally do what people said above.

Forged 6.0l, stock crank. l92 heads with a FAST 102mm and boost would be a MEAN motor. Goodluck.

The ls1 block isn't a problem you'll just have to work it harder to reach you hp goals VS a bigger cubic inch moter. There are guys making 1,000+ hp with a aluminum ls2 block.
