Bigger is always bigger in my opinion, go with the 383. The pistons are the same size I do believe, it's the stroke that's different. If your going to buy a new crankshaft for a 347 then you might as well as spend a couple hundred dollars more for the 383. I wished I had done that with my motor but I had to piece it together cause of money.

Pistons are not the same size, but they are very close. 383 is 3.903 stock is 3.900. Its honed .0030 over. Just to get the block honed knotched, and the rotating assembley balenced it cost me about 1000$. If its worth an extra 1000 to give you a few extra ponies then go for it. The best thing about going 383 is getting all forged rotating assembly. Im going to hit mine with a 200 shot so it was worth it to me.

get an assembled shortblock. Theyre the best deal. Go 408 for the same price. No reason to stay 383 now that we have acces to the LS2 block...or LQ9 iron for cheap.

Oops. I thought you ment that the 346 pistons are the same size.
Depending on rotating assembly they are the same size. I have seen 3.903 and 3.905 on both 347 and 383 pistons, i dont know why though.

Np Frank lol. Yeah I would go 408 also cause for the price of buying a 383 or 347 rotating assembly and having it assembled you could have just bought a iron block 408. HKE has some good deals.

*edit* actually you would be a few hundred dollars short of a 408, sorry about that.

if you want to stay LS1 aluminum go 383 but if you want to run a 200 shot and not worry about things i'd go with a forged iron 408 (LQ4/LQ9 block) just my opinion though. i was in the same boat as you except i'm puttin on a supercharger so i need something that'll handle boost

If you purchase the crank for the 383 might as well spend the extra and make it a 408 just like the guys are saying.
