Default How far can I reasonably push my stock bottom end

I have a 2002 Z-28 which at this point, I'd consider a "full bolt on" car. It's my daily driver until I buy my wife a car this fall, so I don't plan to do much more to it until then.

The car has 75k meticulously maintained miles on it, and everything is in good working order (knock on wood). I plan to do "something" this winter and would like to get in the neighborhood of 500-600 crank horsepower. Being that the stock short block is in good shape and relatively low miles, I'm not sure that I want to go so far as to do a complete engine build this year. I know there are stock bottom end cars in the 10's and 9's, but is 500-600 HP a doable number and still be reliable (as can be expected)? I don't beat on my cars by any means, but what's the point of dropping the coin if you're not going to play with the extra ponies once in awhile?

I'm not sure how I plan to go about the 500-600 HP number, I think that's well within reach of a head/cam/intake swap, but I also considered some sort of F/I like a supercharger while keeping the engine itself closer to stock (maybe just blower + cam).

And before anyone else says it...I'm well aware of the limitations of the rear end and possibly transmission. We'll leave that out for the sake of discussion.

The right h/c/i will get you into the low 500s. You can still keep it reliable at that level. If you go FI, keep the boost down. Once you start creeping up to the 600s it will be iffy on some components.

Make sure your fuel system is up to the task, and it should last a little while! lol

Datzneat is correct. We have seen these cars consistantly hold 550-600rwhp, but once you edge over the 600 mark motors start to have issues. Having enough fuel and a good tune are very important at that point.

Supporting fuel system and tune is what keeps these motors together when you're up there. Just like the other guys are saying. I'm putting a 150 shot on my H/C/I car right now, we'll see if she likes it or not

You're still going to need injectors at the least, I would definitely do a fuel pump too.

550rwhp is usually a fairly safe hp level. The cars that I have seen have issues there usually end up getting detonated due to bad tune or not enough fuel.

I'll be honest I really couldn't tell you how many cars I have seen with motor issues at that point. Too many years to try and sift through!

I'd like to do a blower/cam setup one day just for something different. Ive always built/had all motor cars and think boost would be sweet, especially on a street car to have a lot of torque down low. Its more money up front but if built right I think it would be worth it. Of course I say that only b/c ive never done it before, lol.

Who the hell makes a 37 second video showing "yep, I blew my motor up in the driveway....and yes, these pieces of metal here should be inside the motor....but they're not."

Give me a break

I had 678rwhp on my Old TT GTO and it held for 6mo before it blew a head gasket, no real damage.

Current GTO is 464rwhp NA and 700rwhp on 200 shot (sprayed once so far, and if it makes a 9sec pass on the next one it will be the last 200 )

If you keep the stock bottom end and go the blower route only run 5-7 psi of boost.

How the hell do you blow the motor in your driveway? Did you spray it in park? I'm kind of doubting the responsibility of your mishap lies solely in the parts in your engine.
