Default Copying a cam?

Say I got some spes for a popular cam, say 234/234 .585/.587 112lsa (just making up #'s). Are those the only specs I need to have a copy of this cam ground? or are there other specs too?

How much advance if any (to get you ICL) ie. 112lsa with 4 degrees of advance ground in the cam gets you an 108ICL. Then you have to know what lobe you want, etc., etc... Its a lot more than duration @ .050 and LSA

If you want a cam, support the vendors. They have spent the time to work out the bugs in the cams and get the proper component selection. It sounds like you don't want to pay a vendor for their intellectual property and basically steal their work. If you want vendors to continue to devlop stuff, they have to make some money. While this stuff is cool and all doing stuff for nothing doesn't pay the bills.

If you don't know enough to know what you need it might be a bit better (and safer) to order a cam. Here is the information elgin cams needs to grind a cam for you.

Most vendor cams come as a "kit" with the proper springs, retainers, pushrods, and all the other "stuff"you need to do the cam swap. They make a small but fair profit on the total cost of the package.

oh, ok, so It might not be as bad as I thought then. I'll probably go with a vendor then.

I would check out FMS right now. They are running a pretty nice sale in the GP section for a cam "kit".

you also don't know the ramp rates that the vendors use, that could be a major issue with stock lifters

getting a custom cam cost the same as what the vendors usually charge for theres. i have an odd ball combo so after looking in the comp catalog i found the specs i wanted for a custom cam. then i found out that it was cheaper to go though ls1speed, give them the specs i wanted and buy it though them. if i were to go straight to comp i would of spent about $25 more for the same one. you might want to give them a call.

definately go with the sponsors. spec'ing a cam isnt as easy as it sounds, and often times people are less then satisfied with there "copy" cam.

Ditto. FMS is producing one HELLUVA camshaft that cannot be duplicated no matter how hard you tried. Great service, awesome driveability, and well.....Look at my dyno #'s....

I would have to say call LG. They put in alot of time on the dyno with cams. I also agree that we should support the vendors on the board. Lou gave me info on my cam to install it, trusting me not to give out the info. They put in too much work to give away there setups! Good luck with your build!
