no its not a GM crank, its a 408 with an Eagle Crank.
I tried with the 1.019 and it was too big bc it was being scored as it was entering the crank. I am going to try the GM dealership manana.
Eagle told me to use one that was 1 inch, and to get it anywhere they were sold. They were not very helpful with that information.
I bet the GM will fit like a glove, besides, the one from the auto parts store is very different as far as shape, the one I took out is more of a dome than a straight cap.
look at the picture so you can see what I mean.

noticed how they are not beveled and not the same shape....maybe thats why I am having a hard time setting it in...

Listen to me...I've had to do it TWICE!!! On a brand new eagle forged crank for my 408. Eagle SUCKS!

I didn't have luck with a puller. I had to chip it out. But I used several magnets and grease to gather the shards. First time I didn't listen and didn't use RTV. Well it leaked!....second time I used a good amount of RTV and no leaks. I hate to think about RTV since I look at it as a rig job but it worked! I will say GM has the plug USE THAT ONE it looks like the original you took out. Use the RTV around it as you tap it in then use extra on the inside...Check my post about it in 2009.

How loose is the 1 inch fit? I personally would seal it with red locktite but Permatex Ultra RTV should work too. Just be sure to let it dry overnight before using it.

Im getting the one from GM tomorrow using the permatex Ultra RTV sealant. I will not be able to start the car since I am in the middle of the tranny swap anyhow.
RyanS: I would hate to drop the tranny again, this was an incidental finding BTW. I want to make it good to go so I dont have trouble in the future. I will follow your advice and use plenty of sealant....

Ohhh that's right...ls1tech deleted my post. I bought my short block from a vendor here and well it wasn't very nice but in the end I got a credit from my extra work. Mine leaked several drops. In the end it also destroyed my new CenterForce clutch. So this deal cost me about 1,300.

I want to warn you about using RTV in a engine, use it sparingly and without getting any extra on things. It can easily jam the oil pump relief valve etc if peices of rtv get into the oil. Good Luck.

the sealant I am using is applied with a brush, it will only be used to coat the rim of the cap and some of the crank surface.
I just got back from the GM dealership with 2 caps, I hope this ones dont give me any trouble.
Ryan, how exactly did you drive them in the crank?

good stuff, the new plug from GM went in with not so much trouble compared to the autozone one. I think it will not leak since I did apply some sealant....keep fingers crossed.

on another note. I cant do anymore to the car until next week. I did as much as I could by myself and the tranny is a bxxxh to put up Solo.

thanks for all the input and suggestions.

I used a thick piece of wood. With the RTV it won't leak and yes I was worried with putting RTV in my crank. I used a little brake cleaner to make sure that the RTV did stick and not come loose on oil presure. This was 6-7 mos ago and now I've put in a melling high pressure oil pump that goes to 80lbs cold with only 10W30. So this is the test.
