that's what I was thinking also if it was leaking it would just drain to the pan I'm going to do this first. O ring on oil pump, rear seal, and a new barbell in the rear just I case while I'm there put a new one in

well just today so far my problem looks like it my be solved all i did was go to a thicker weight oil instead of using full synthetic. I had penzoil platinum 10w30 full synthetic and idled at 25-30psi hot. Switched to a 20w50 weight and now after driving it all day pressure stayed at a consistant 45psi at idle and never dropped below that and was at 60psi cruising but im a th400 so cruising speed for me at 60 is over 3k lol.

if I were you id jack the car up hold the front of the motor with a hoist pull the motor mount bolts to the motor can go as high as possible might have to watch the y pipe to the headers don't slip out ..then I unbolted the front shocks from under the car and took out the 6 bolts to the k member to give me a lot of room so I didn't mess up the o ring again I put the o ring and pick up on and off about 4 times before I was happy how it felt going in the oil pump.

I have the same thing stock, my car sits at about 25-30 at idle...yet still climbs to around 70 under normal driving and wot. it runs fine and the valve-train sounds great then again it should with only 20,000 original miles on it! so i dont really pay much attention to it anymore.

I had the same problem yesterday, but a fresh oil change and new filter did the trick. I have a feeling that sometimes the filters can get messed up. No scientific proof, but somehow my pressure is ok now.
I don't think the problem was the oil, because the change in pressure was so sudden that it would be very unlikely to have the oil degrading that much in the course of a few days.

Just to clear a point up here, If the oring is damaged nicked etc it lets AIR into the oil stream that in going into the pump. NOTHING ELSE, it doesn't leak oil etc............ The aerated oil then causes all kinds of funky problems. If the damage to the oring is large enough to introduce enough air the oil pressure will be lower. A small nick will only cause lifter ticking noises.

I saw a tip on one of the old episodes of Horsepower TV where they had same problem. The problem was the o-ring was getting pinched on pickup tube when tightened down. The fix was to drill out the holes on the pickup tube a little so whole is oval/oblong in shape. That relived enough stress on pickup tube from pinching the o-ring and letting air in. You can watch episode on iTunes or PowerblockTV. I think it was episode 18 in 2009.
