Default Just checked my oil, no oil on the dipstick!

I picked up my car a couple days ago from getting my headers changed and drove around 40miles to get home. I didn't notice any odd smells. Yesterday/today I smelled a burning smell when I was stopped at street lights. I checked the oil, and there is no oil on the dipstick. I do have some oil leaks, but I didn't think it was this bad. I had a spare quart of Mobil 1 in the garage, so I poured it in. Still nothing on the dipstick. Anyone have any ideas on what could cause the oil loss so dramatically? Also, I've probably driven about 80 miles since I got my car back, do you think its likley that I did some damage?

Any help is appreciated.

Patrick.

I would think it is possible you might have done some damage.
I would be curious to find out 'how' low you were on oil.
maybe add oil and keep track of how much you have to add to get to the full line on the dipstick.
It sounds like you might have been low enough that the engine was starving for oil at times.....
Good luck.

I just added 2 more quarts and it brought it up to right below the add lines. I'm going to let it all settle and check in the morning.

these cars also have a low oil light, just like ses.
so it should have came on if u were very low.
i would check it though, considering how much added. it was definitly low!

My car burns a quart every 3k or so, the low oil light comes on at just under 1 quart low, is it not working in your car?

I had to take my oil filter off to get the driver header off, was that done? Did they not top it off after?

If you havent done the LS6 PCV conversion, it may be worth it, tho it shouldnt be burning it that fast. I used to add a quart or so between changes but not after 40-80 miles.

the dipstick has to come out for a header swap, make sure it was replaced correctly

I'd be looking for a new shop in the future if they let your car leave 3 qts low and didnt tell you

if your hard on your car i would get in the habit of checking the oil once or twice a week just to keep an eye on it.. driving at higher rpms tend to use more oil than average driving, and check your pcv system ..
