Default CheaTR cam w/ or without headers?

I'm planning on doing the AFR205 / cheaTR cam package from Thunder. My question is, that if this cam was designed for stock manifolds, how will it respond it I put on a pair of headers also?

I'm not set on headers for sure, and I'm not opposed to shorties if I get 10-15hp out of them w/ this cam setup.

The number one thing I'm looking for is drivability. (and 400rwhp)

Which is a better setup?

Mac mids, AFR205's, 224/224-115lsa

or

Stock / shortie manifolds, AFR205's, cheaTR cam.

Cats are a must here in Cali. I already have the GMMG catback and lid going for me.

Are you looking at the "CheaTR" - 214/230 .601/.575 117 LSA, or the " CheaTR v.3" - 219/230 .607/.604 117 LSA ?
I would go with the CheaTR v.3 over the regular CheaTR.

Or go custom, maybe something like a 220/226 114lsa, 220/228 115lsa, 218/230 115lsa.
There's plenty of good site sponsors to get you what you want/need.

stock manifolds arent gonna cut it, taking in much much more air and trying to stuff it out of the stock manifolds is gonna kill your power bad.

You're looking at the same thing I am. You're not going to get away with mids in SD unless you "know" someone but I am going to be going with shorties and stock cats with the AFR/cheatr package.

That's not necessarily true when you are using a camshaft that was designed to work with the stock manifolds like the CheaTR camshaft was intended for.

That cam will work fine with headers as well. You won't go wrong either way!!

I guess what the real meat of my question really boils down to is: Does this cam/heads package make shorty headers worth while?

I want 400rwhp w/ stock cats in stock locations. The package alone with my current mods won't get me there. If I could get 10-20 more out of shorties though, I might make it over the line.

What do you think Thunder?

If you are worried about being legal in California, just keep the stock manifolds. Even a mid-length is moving a "catalytic converter from its stock location" thus making it illegal. Technically. I don't see how you wouldnt be making 400rwhp with AFR heads and cam anyway. I think with stock manifolds you should have that number on lockdown. Plus, you already have an 01' so you got the better manifolds already.

If I were you. Heads/Cam/Intake...done.

not having headers isnt going to short you 60rwhp or even 30rwhp, and possibly less than that. If you end up making 350rwhp then maybe they are meant to be. That wont happen though because of 2 reasons. 1, you are an M6 (dyno queen). 2, you have a black car.

it will work OK with stock exhaust manifolds but to get even more power L/T's a must and engine is like a giant vacumm the more air in it needs more air coming out to run efficiently etc. go with a pair of long tubes you can get longtubes for 250 and up just stay away from the cheap asian built headers on ebay no no no

i just noticed you live in cali well same here and i have shorties and i noticed no power increase on the dyno i have a 00z but itg has 241 heads and the 01 to 02 style exhaust manifold and they flow just as well as shorties so im going with long tubes then when i have to smog il just swap back to stock then swap back to L/t's we smog once every 2 years so switching back every two years is not a bad comprmise at all

Shorties are a waste of money compared to the good manifolds from 2000-2002. You can reach 400rwhp with stock manifolds and the new V3 CheaTR. If you decide to do long tube headers down the road, you can expect to gain another 20rwhp.
