That block seems to be finished much nicer than the production blocks, especially around he windows in the valley.

Pieces of Automotive history, pretty neat! It's crazy to think that LS1 motors were already out and rolling around almost immediately after the LT1 went into action. No wonder the LTx was short lived.

The "next generation" GM corporate V8 had it's first designs on paper as a six cylinder before the LT1 first came out. The LT1 was considered a temporary V8 "modernization" that would be used until the new V8 was certified and mass production was ramped up.

Emissions, fuel economy, internal friction, foundry/assembly needs, NVH and weight improvements would be required than no SBC, even in LT1 trim, could meet.

It wasn't a case of "oops, we made a great engine, lets ditch the SBC platform". It was all part of a plan. GM had numbered the days for the LT1 from the day they released it.

That's awesome. I would hold onto that if you can get your hands on it. Might be worth something some day.

Imagine this bringing money like the original zl1 all aluminum 427 from 69...

The prototype engineers at GM are a good group of guys to work with. I used to communicate with them regularly when I was a machine designer for a Tier 1 OEM supplier. Believe it or not, some of the dimensions of components on the 5th gen camaro were tweaked by me

If only I could have designed the entire car... would've put that pig on a diet.

That's interesting to know, I only wish they decided to produce C4 with the LS architecture back then. Maybe offer it as a Corvette "classic" like they do with the trucks

This does not suprise me, If you think about all the advancements in the LS engines over the old SBC/LT1, they had to have been working on it for a while. Its not like in the winter of 96 they just came up with the LS1 to go into the Corvette coming out that summer. I would not be suprised if there is even earlier stuff.

I remember going to the Corvette museum and seeing a C5 before it was realesed to the public. They had it covered up in a room with a big glass window so that you could not get close to it. I never got to see that car uncovered, but it was still pretty cool imagining what it looked like.

This is cool as ****!!! I would rebuild it to stock and keep it in storage until it's worth retarded money.

It's not surprising how long it spent in development stages. It went through a hell of a lot of changes too. The exhaust side of the heads is hardly recognizable as an LS1.

Not everything that is collectible is worth money, there was a 1996 trans am with ls1 and 98 body pieces with x in the vin code for sale a while back for $6500 if I remember correctly

I'm thinking those motors would make AWESOME coffee tables; conversations pieces while keeping some history.
