Default Is Sonic testing required?

A few of you may remember that I bought a 6.0L iron block a month ago.

The block seems to be fairly low miles, there is no ridge at the top of any of the cyl and you can still see the factory hone in all bores.

When the time comes, I want to bore it approx .030 over to have a final bore of 4.030.

I want to take the block to get cleaned and possible sonic tested, but is it really required for me to sonic test this block with only a planned over bore of .030?

I found a few shops in town say yes and some say no, which is it?

I just don't want to waste my money if I don't have to.

Hey Reckless, you reading this???

ALL OPINIONS ARE WELCOME...

Thanks,

Bill

I would not worry about it with a .030 over bore. If you wanted to go .060, definitely

I agree 10000%. NO sonic testing required with .030 or .040 overbore. Anything bigger then yes!!!

Magna fluxing is a term that describes checking something metal (block, heads, etc) for cracks using a metal powder and a REALLY strong magnet

I would personally do it from experience. There is big time differences between these blocks. Some are as low as 107 on the pin sides of the first block I had tested. I would sonic test and then offset bore the cylinder to the thicker side of the chamber. It doesn't cost you any extra machine work labor for them to offset a couple cylinders, and you are left with thicker cylinder walls. Whats another 90 bucks anyway for peace of mind.

Better safe than sorry, that’s my opinion, and as “strokesls1” points out, all blocks are NOT created equal. Although a .030 over bore is not going to be a problem regardless, it might be good knowledge to have in the future.

The 6.0 liters wil go 4.030 with no problems. I would not worry about sonic testing unless you are going to go bigger than that. I can do sonic checking at my shop, if you can't find anyone else closer to you.
