I helped a friend ,put a hot cam in a carburated LQ9 with the MSD LS controller , we had the heads shaved to get 11 to 1 and all we did was replace the pushrods and valve springs and we put this in a 81 firebird with hawks conversion headers and wow this thing pulls like crazy , dont know the dyno numbers but it is has lots of torque , this winter were going to clean up the heads and get a little more there , he wanted to go with the asa cam but decided on the hotcam because he didnt want to get a high stall converter , he wanted to keep his old one , i guess it all depends on how you want to drive the car , eric

Seems like thats a pretty tiny cam for an LQ9. To each their own though. I understand the part of wanting to keep your current stall, but it seems that there are people out there that want a cam, but are not willing to gear or stall for it, then the cam gets bad reviews with only half the story revealed.

yes i understand where your coming from about the choices in stall converter , it is very important to properly choose one if you want to really get the full potential of your cam , funny that you mention this because i had told him that the asa cam with a higher stall of about 3200 would have been wicked but with all the money he had already spent he didnt even want to add some to get a higher stall , i am pretty sure when he asks me to help him with the heads this winter he is going to go bigger on the cam and hopefully he will listen on getting a higher stall , by the way do you know what the asa cam sounds like in a ls1 , i ask because i will be building one slowly this fall for my truck , right now i have a 4.8 in my truck with a magnuson its a 2000 silverado 4x4 single cab longbed and it is lifted 7in , i have worked the exausht system completely and intake with a 85mm tb , i put a 2001 ls6 cam and spings with comp cam pushrods with a 2800 stall , but what scares me is my stock rod bolts , its pretty fast for a lifted truck on 35in tires , it can do high twelves , but with all that said i am looking to go NA with an ls1 , i just get fed up of the heat soak when it gets hot out , or i may dump all this on a 6.0, but i realize that the 6.0 magnuson will outpower the ls1 setup, Eric

You run 12's in a lifted 4wd with 35" tires using a supercharged V6?
I would like to see that.
Do you run an 1/8th mile or maybe a thousand foot track?

Yes i run high 12's with my small sc 4.8 , my best time in the quarter mile is 12.82 and the one eight was 7.96 on that run and my 60' was 1.78 , it really gets out of the hole but if my truck was droped instead of lifted with 35,s its 2nd one eigth would be alot faster because of the lift that drags alot of air and the wheels and tires are heavy as hell , i like it because there are not alot of fast trucks here in quebec because most people are into imports or old school so it is original, Eric

I'm running a hotcam in my DD.

Great sound, and zero maintenance involved. I didn't buy it for the performance, haha.

What vheicle year is your 5.3 from and what vheicle , i ask because if it is the newer versions with the cam sensors up front you will not be able to use the hot cam , there may be a conversion kit not sure , with that said i do have a Ls2 cam with zero miles on it got it from a shop who took it out new , thought i was getting a deal but realized the cam sensor is in the front of the cam and my 2000 block is at the rear , its not as hot as hotcam but alot more than your stock 5.3 cam that at 191/191 with .457intake and .467exhaust , the ls2 is 204/212 .525intake and .525exhaust , i was getting it for my SC 4.8 , so i finally bought a 2001 LS6 cam , really nice on my SC 4.8, Eric

Wow, the Hot Cam sure does draw a lot of attention! lol

Anywho, I have a new hot cam, ls6 springs, and all of the associated parts to go along with the install now. All of you guys have been a big help. Thanks for the comments.

I started a new thread for anyone wanting to give any advice on the install. It is my first swap and I am excited as hell. There will be video results after the install.

Thanks once again.

my 5.3 is from a 04 suburban, the cam sensor is still in the back of the block.

i actually have a cam from a 01 ZO6, but i want the hot cam in my engine, just preference.

that being said... anyone interested in selling or trading a hot cam for an 01 ZO6 cam?
