Default Is this the right cam for me?

I've got a 98 m6 Camaro full bolt ons and I've been looking at the tr224 for a while but recently I've been considering a custom grind of 226 229 .575/.576 on 114 but after reading about this guy with the lq9 I'm not
Sure if I should stick to the tr224. I'm also installing 243 heads and I'm planning to stay with the 3.42 rear for a while. Is this cam too big for this setup? The car is supposed to be a DD and Im supposed to pay for it soon. Let me know what should I do

The 224 is a relatively small cam and more then suitable for DD cars. You could even bump it up a notch to like a 226/228, 228/228...if not a little bigger if you wanted to. A good tune def comes into play as well.

It's all about what you want. It also depends on what you consider "good drive-ability". I personally like driving a car with a bigger cam. But that's just me.

the tr224 will make 390 rwhp,or consider a custom cam from Pat-G for $25 more.

i have a rather large cam, see my sig for specs. If you are in stop and go traffic, it would be a pain. Its really hard to go 5 mph with this cam, it basically is ready to lauch going 5 mph, it basically starts to lope while driving that slow. Any other speed its great, just stop and go traffic is a pain.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that cam or any cam for that matter makes a certain amount of power. Not all set ups mod for mod with this cam will be the same. Sure they might be rather close in numbers, but I've seen M6 guys with bolt ons and the TR224 come in at the 370+ mark. The majority of them push more then that...I have seen guys pick cams based off HP #'s which isn't really the best way to go about choosing a cam.

Id go with something bigger. You'll put that cam in and wish you had gone bigger I'm sure. Keep doing your research.

You guys don't think I'll have a problem with the 3.42 rear?

Those 2 cams will perform almost the same honestly. Just a few degrees difference will be hard to tell. I think either cam would be good for you. I like my TR224 a lot, I've put about 65k miles on it. Great street cam.

If I do 65 on the highway I can average 24mpg with mostly highway driving. That's what I was getting when gas was up around $4 a gallon anyway. Usually I get around 21MPG average at normal highway speeds.

Look at my signature my cam is 228/232 588/595 XER lobes.I have driven alittle over a hundred miles since the work was done and that 100 miles was with 5 gallons of gas ,but I refilled asoon as my light came on so I figured I got around 19-20mpg and i'm not fully tuned yet.
I was getting 28mpg with no cats or muffler before the swap.

A 224 is a great DD cam. I should know, I have had one in my car for a couple of years. Never DD it but I could have for sure. It's for sale too ironically.

I have a 228-230 588-591 at 112 and it is really street friendly and makes good power! It's a DD until winter hits!
It's all in the tune! But I hear really good things about that 228-228 cam! Everyone is different when it comes to a big cam! Hell some guys think M3 and M4's are small :>)

Fyi by average MPG numbers I mean I keep track of the real miles on the trip meter and exactly how much gas goes in the tank and I divide them. In these cars you can expect high teens city and high 20s highway. If you really measure you will end up somewhere in the middle. And if you floor it your numbers will be lower. More fun though.

The TR224 didn't hurt the mileage.

Yep, I would go bigger too than a tr224. Even if it is a daliy driver I would still go with a 228r or similar. I have PRC243's and a tr224 like you planned on doing and made 420rwhp. A 228r would give another 5-6rwhp but it's free hp and shouldn't have any tradeoffs with a good tune.
