Default valve to piston clearance

Just curious on how to measure valve to piston clearance. i know you cant cut the engine in two or just hold a valve at what you think might be the right height.

I just want to make sure the new high lift cam will clear my pistons.

Will the heads be off the car? There are a few ways to do this.

Get (or make) 2 solid lifters, put some clay on the piston, tighten the head down without a gasket, make 2 revolutions, remove head, measure the thinnest part of the clay, add compressed head gasket thickness, review the results.

The solid lifter gives you a true measurement. The hydraulic lifter will compress and you will not get the correct number.

I would use your old gasket to do this as no gasket and a tight clearance can lead to the valve hitting the piston.

You can use the roller lifters with a dial indicator, check springs, adjustable pushrod and a very careful touch.

How do I go about making a solid lifter if all I have is a hydraulic? If I use a solid one on my hydraulic setup wont the numbers be off?

I measured, .06-.07 in with a digital caliper and clay impressions without a head gasket. So including a head gasket I should be right in the .1 ball park, which is good right?
