Heads/cam with 100k ?
So im shopping for a f-body.
But sadly the ones in my price range have about 100k.
My future plans for it would be basic bolt ons with a heads/cam combo.
But Id like some opinions, is it to risky to mod a car with milage over 100k?
I dont want something thats going to last just a few weeks.
Would I be better off just waiting untill I find something with better milage ?
or is 100k on a LS1 ok once I change the valve springs, all gaskets and the timing chain and oil pump.
Any input is welcome. Especially if you have higher milage

do a compression check and if its good your good...100k is just broke in..and finding lower than 75k on these motors is a needle in a hay stack...its been nearly 10 years now since last f-body production...DO Ya Homework
P.s. i have 176000 miles and it'll run ya'll And yes i've ownd an LS1

I know a couple of different cars around here who did heads/cam swaps with over 100k. One spun a bearing with a little over 100k on it (4k on the swap) and the other one has close to 150k on it and it runs strong. Anything can happen. Hell, I did a cam swap on my car when it had 16k on it and I now have 42k on it. No problems yet, but I get paranoid everytime I hear the motor make a different noise, ha.
If the car was taken care of then you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck with the search.

100k on these motors ain't sheeit, a cam swap is essentially a new top end.

It will be fine, and just an FYI someone posted above about spun bearings, they are not from higher horse power from a H/C swap, they are from oiling issues or too high of RPM's which is what rod bolts are needed for (higher RPM's that stretch the bolt allowing the bearing to spin). So don't worry about rod bolts if you are not spinning it up to rediculous RPM's. For what its worth I have 182k on mine and it has been spun to 6700 for the last 2 years/25 or so thousand miles. The bottom end will take the power increase no problem. Its RPM's and improper put together setups that are the killer, LS1 bottom ends can take the power increase all day.
There are plenty of people on the board that have done cams etc.. above 200k, just maintain the car and dont go trying to rev it to 7k and you will be fine.
One last thing, I would actually be skeptical of any LS1 F body out there with less than 100k, they are on average 10 years old, I know there are a few but... very few.

I know oil can be a issue, I was thinking of going with a ported ls6 pump with a ls2 timing chain. Unless you guys think aftermarket would be better. But I've always had best luck with oem.
What about lifters ? Ls7 or should stock be ok.

Have seen a few 200-250k ls1 vettes with factory stock bottom ends. My car is @ 111k, took the heads of and the cylinder walls STILL had the cross hatching in them. going H/C @ 100k mi has the same chance of blowing up as doing H/C @ 50k mi, it's more dependant on the maintenance over the life of the motor and the correct install than milage.
Go for it!

We get guys with 100+k miles on cars starting to mod them all the time. I couldn't tell you how many of those guys are running MS4 cams too! As long as you put good components in with the heads/cam and take care of it, you shouldn't see an issue. It's a good idea to do a compression and leak down test as well. You don't want to put heads/cam on the car just to be disappointed that the rings are worn out and not sealing. That will also effect your gains from your setup. Let us know if you we can help!
