Default What size cam for a 427

If i had a 427 CI motor and I wanted to put a "big" cam in it, what would be a reasonable cam to run without risking the engine too much

SEE my sig. regarding my MTI S1 cam which has put one big cubed N/A 422 stroker into the 9s N/A (first n/a Lsx motor to accomplish this) and many other cars in the 10s on motor! ITs 100% streetable and still somewhat stout for today's big cam standards. ITS a 244/244, .612 lift on a 112 lsa. The cam Simply ROCKS and is battle tested on the street and strip!!!!

Cams dont hurt motors. As long as you have the valvetrain to support the cam, you are fine.

The S1 is about what the average Joe puts in their 427s. If you want more hp, you can definitely go bigger if you wish.

Like you said, if you want a "big" cam, I would go upto 248-250 duration.

Why would a big cam ever "risk" a motor?

I run a 242/242 in my 427 and I have an A4. My idle is awesome and doesnt surge at all. Here is a link to the car idling. I would say a more Stout cam would be a 248/248 . That would be a nice BIG cam. Goals, Trannies, and street use are all things to consider when choosing your cam. Good Luck.

I can see having piston to valve clearance issues depending on the size of the cam, but those are the kinds of things that are worked out before the motor ever runs.

Just trying to figure out what you mean by "risking" the motor.

Bravo the weather here is CRAZY!! FREEZING cold and sowy. I put 100 miles on the clock driving home from JD's and maybe another 15 miles the other 2 weeks ive had it. No results yet. I am also having Hals put on, BMR K-Member, and a new BMW rear swaybar. I wont see much of the car over the next 2 weeks or so. Good Luck.

Ok, not to highjack the thread, but what about for a 387 ALL BORE? Id like as much power as possible, but relatively nice idle qualities. I can live with some buck. But i dont want to shake myself out of my seat at a redlight. Thanks
