Default Tore the heads off today to fix Cometic... look at pics

Some may remember my flutter noise I thought long ago was a header gasket leak. It revealed itself by pushing into the overflow not long after. So today was teardown!

First picture is of orange looking crust (rust) on the center two bolts in the head. Seems I have seen other LS pictures with it in there. What is it or causes it?

Second picture is of the non-leaking side head. Just thought it looked weird that second from last intake valve is kind of white.

Here is the flutter! Looks like the inner ring delaminated and was hanging out there. You can see where the gasket is black to the outside (no Copper spray still there) where it had been pushing out under RPM and into that coolant passage on the head side.

Here is the block side of the bad gasket. Still sealed and looked good so thankfully nothing done to the block.

Any ideas on what caused this? At any rate I am milling the heads and putting in GM MLS gaskets.

Just a clean-up/flatness cut. About .010" or so.

i recently pulled the intake on mine and discovered the same orange residue on my heads like yours and also on my valley cover. With a razor blade i was able to scrape off some of it from the valley cover, but i am also curious as to what this is and what causes it?

Stock bore size

The orange stuff I believe must be a rust caused by condensation in that area. I'm thinking about Cosmoline coating the bolt heads before putting on the intake.

Any comments on the "orange stuff" or possible causes of the gasket issue?

Wouldn't hurt to spray something on there before putting the intake on, I have heard of water getting under the intakes and causing bolts to rust, etc. It also caused issues with knock sensors if I remember right.
