Default LS1 carnage after a night at the track

Last Wednesday I was hunting for 11's with only bolt on's in my Camaro at Gainesville raceway. I ran a best of 12.092@114 mph with a 1.780 60' time, and the saying goes.....they always run their best just before they let go. Two runs later, just before the 1/4 mile, the car starts sputtering then a loud bang and a cloud of smoke behind me. Oil and coolant everywhere. Got a chance to start taking her apart today and thought I'd share the pics. Got the passenger side head pulled and fears were confirmed. At the least #6 piston is cracked and definitely not connected to the crank. I think I got pretty far with her today, considering I was taking my time, labeling parts, and bagging bolts since she'll be down for awhile. Started around 12:30 and quit around 9pm. Here are the pics

not a good sign when you see this after taking off the lid

And the breakdown process

#5 looking a little wet

8, 6, and 2 also wet

And the carnage....#6 is done for....sleeve and all!!!

and the head

And the one headed monster

That sucks. You normally don't see N/A setups let go at the ringland like that. Why did the sleeve crack? Did you have dex-cool and green antifreeze in it?

Just dexcool. I don't know what this engine has been through before I got it. I've had it for 2 years, but only driven maybe 10,000 miles. I drained and put new dexcool in it when I got it two years ago. Not sure why it was clogging up like that in the gasket, but she's never had a cooling issue. I'm waiting to see what the driver side looks like too, I'm betting #7 is gone too, was probably the first to go and debris caused a chain reaction.

I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with her now. I'm still in school for another year and a half (law school), but I have a DD. Final plan is a 408 w/ F1A, might slowly gather the parts for that, but money is the main issue right now. She's already got a pretty strong driveline; MWC fab'ed 9", PST 1200hp driveshaft, MWC lower control arms, etc. I'll probably be doing the little things like repainting the engine bay and cleaning the ridiculously dirty underside of the car for the time being.

urrgghhh, I have to go through this every time I post pics. It's not dirt. The car was originally a Canadian car (yes I know there were built in Canada). It came with a km/hr speedo, block heater, and a coating under the hood to prevent rust. I tried removing it with degreaser and it didn't do much damage and left the result you see.

Sucks for the motor, but the new build sounds amazing! Will definitely be worth the time and $$$!

Looks like the block is toast, crack on both sides of that cylinder. Good luck with your next project.

Wow, that looks all too familiar. Check out mine:

I honestly woulda left the head/LTs on it and dropped the k member and then disassembled the engine.

Wow, just about the exact same cylinder damage! I haven't gone over the block completely, but I'm sure there's a small hole somewhere.

i'm not ragging on the car or anything, it just looks nasty man. sucks about the motor and all, but since you'll have it out now, you can do some cleaning/painting on the bay to make it look much nicer! gl with the build man

Sorry about your car. Very curious why it let go that way though on a bolt on car.

i have never seen coolant passages so bad like that before. almost looks like the coolant was mixing with oil for a while. Is this the first time the heads were off the car?

As far as I know, yes. This is the first time I've unbolted anything off it except for the stock exhaust manifold and the intake. Oil/coolant always looked good when I checked 'em.

Np! Just like to let people know it's not my lack of taking care of it. Just something outta my control for now. But now that the engine will be out soon, I can take everything out and do it right.

That car is a 98 not too surprising that happened. I am willing to bet that the clogged up mess in the coolant passages caused alot of heat built up around the sleeve. Given the already thin materal 97-98s have and the insane RPM you were putting on her with your bulletproof drivetrain it just kind of happend lol. I am only LOL because I just got H/C/I on my 98 and I will let you know when this happens to me When something breaks its going to be the weakest link!

Honestly, everything there looks like ****... The engine bay, the oil staining, the cooling system. Was the oil EVER changed? The coolant obviously NEVER was, and you had a leak as evidenced by the sludging of the coolant passages.

I think I see a broken coil spring too.

That engine lived a hard life.

You can tell all that by a few pics huh? Re read what was posted about the engine bay (no one EVER does), I changed the oil frequently with GC 0w-30 while I had it, I changed out coolant when I got it 2 years ago (not sure how I was supposed to check coolant passages during a routine fluid change). What happen to this engine/car BEFORE I got it....I don't know. But since I've had it, it has had proper care. Could it be possible that when the coolant and oil mixed during the engine failure that the sludge formed then? It was only on the gasket. When I removed the gasket there was no sludge build up in the head or in the block.
