Default Camaro SS LS1 Engine Overhaul

I have a 2002 Camaro SS and over the next few years I will be collecting parts for my engine makeover. Car is in perfect shape the way it is but ill be adding Pictures of my parts and in 2013 when Im through with car payments Ill put the car on collector car insurance and street rod tags in order to avoid emission testing here in MD.

My car is showroom floor stock, the basics are 5.7 ls1, 6 speed transmission, 10 Bolt posi traction, 3.42 gear ratio. Traction control delete.

Any way the cam I purchased is: Comp 54-428-11

This is the start of my parts collection, Im going to take the time to make sure the next parts I buy cooperate with eachother.

If your "makeover" is a couple years out, why would you not just put together a new, larger engine? There are better head options available for larger bore engine, unless you are going FI going to a 370/408 or larger won't cost a lot more and will make more power.

I have no comments on your cam other than most guys establish what heads/intake etc before buying a cam. In my past builds with BBC's, cam is one of the last things you purchase.

Just a few things off the top of my head, I'll be glad to hear of different/other recommendations from others.
  • Valve Train matched to Camshaft Above
  • Fast Intake Manifold with 92 MM Throttle Body
  • SLP Engine Damper
  • Different Pistons
  • Bigger Oil Pan
  • Aftermarket Cylinder Heads Ported & Polished to Match Headers
  • Hooker Super Competition Headers 1 7/8" Primaries
  • 3" Hooker Headers 16723-1HKR - Hooker Y-Pipes
  • High Flow Catalatic Converters
  • MSD Coil Packs
  • Optima Battery

Lol please chime in on the cons about the cam I chose. I thought about saving up for a 427 ls engine but I just want to beef up what I have so theres less parts sitting around.

    1. k, what do you mean by that? i'll tell you that you need comp magnum 7.4 push rods, at least comp 918 spring if not patriot duals, ls2 timing set. lifters, rockers, and oil pump would also do you good.

    2. FAST is always good.

    3. ASP or ATI.

    4. why? and if you are gonna tear down the block why not just buy a bigger motor? it'll be about the same price.

    5. why? you don't need it.

    6. what cylinder heads?

    7. if you are stock cubes and using that little cam all you need is 1 3/4"

    8. hooker sucks.

    9. you do know that there are ways around cats right? and its cheaper. just saying.

    10. don't need 'em.

    11. what's wrong with the battery you have now? it's probably lighter.

the cam you chose is a little on the small side. which is fine. it will have good low end but your top end will leave something to be desired. which also means that FAST and ported heads wont realize the solid gains you will be looking for. i would say you'd be making 415-420 rwhp. which just by switching cams you could see 440-450 and still have a great curve.

your plan seems ok if your not wanting nothing huge, but honestly with the route your going, I would do tons and tons of research before pulling the trigger on anything. it really all depends on what your goals are going to be, bc with a t56 you might wanna upgrade the rear, and susp is almost a must. good luck with the build, and research, research, research..

no. valve train is the only thing that is absolutely necessary.

1 3/4" headers, FAST, heads, cat back, ASP pulley, injectors, dyno tune, clutch, master cylinder, lca's, phb, sways, shocks springs, rear end, drive shaft. there is plenty that is recommended but not absolutely required.

i still don't know what your goal is.

that car sounds that mean because it's untuned. it would be a lot smoother after hitting the dyno. it should actually only be slightly more choppy than my cam.

a low LSA on the cam, like 110 or 112 is what makes is sound like that. Check out an MS4 or Trex cam video! Ha
