Default to port or not to port?

I'm gettin a fast 90 tomorrow. I'm debating whether or not I should get it ported before retuning. What kinda realistic gains could I see from porting it? I will also be goin with the ftp98mm lid and a 85 mm maf.

10 more horse would be worth it for sure. Anyone know how much mamo charges?

7-13 depending on the cam. The LS6 intake can actually support the flow of the heads with a stock 02 LS 6 cam. If you had stock LS1 heads I wouldn't bother. Mamo will take that intake completely apart while many others don't do.

$500 seems pretty steep to me. my tuner said that there is a guy in seattle that has ported tons of ls intakes and he is cheap and good at it. i think ill probly go that route. if i only gained 5rw with the porting id rather have that than 7-10 for $400 more lol

Porting the 90-92mm intakes (thoroughly and properly) is worth 10-12 RWHP....

To do it right requires a heap of plastic removal in all the right places....and none in others.....which is half the trick.

You have to know what to really get at with the grinder and what to barely touch....not to mention have the skills and the proper shaped carbide cutters to do it consistently one hole after the next. A flowbench and access to a dyno is key here for best results.

When you see an intake I finished you would better understand what I charge and why....I could do half the work and charge you half the price (and give you a piece most customers would still be thrilled to look at) but that's just not the type of work I get involved in.

In fact I would have to admit that I would probably make more money over the long haul (in volume) if I did but not everything is about the dollars....I would rather deliver a really killer piece to a smaller market segment because for me its all about the pride in workmanship and a top notch execution of the work performed....whether its cylinder heads, manifolds, or complete dyno tested custom engines.

Not too mention I have been doing this longer than anybody....I pioneered this mod and started porting FAST's (in 2004) when everyone else said "WHY.....surely you dont have to". This is a fact btw....some of the older members probably remember that. Whats funny is now if you want to make serious power and get the most from your combo everyone questions just the opposite (you didn't port your FAST??....LOL). You also pay for experience....not unlike any other specialized trade.

Hope this helps....

OP....you may wish you paid someone to do this if your fussy about the outcome of the work and you will find its more time consuming than you think to do it right but a big issue here is what will all that time really yield? I have seen some "ported intakes" yield less results than stock on the dyno.

Good luck....if I can help shoot me a PM

-Tony

I would definately suggest you have your intake ported. A quick search will yield quite a few posts with results of ported Vs non ported FAST intake comparisons. Typical gains on a heads/cam combo are 7 to 10rwhp OVER a non ported FAST. We have been in the game as long as anyone and have MANY extremely happy customers out there using our ported intakes.

We charge $275.00 to port a customer supplied intake and offer a 48 to 72 hour turn around. We are less expensive than some and more expensive than others. Our results speak for themselves.

Remember you get what you pay for...there is a reason some are cheaper than others, less material removed and time spent...

So each sponsor offers a different approach, both have something for different customers...now you just need to decide which category you fit into...

i personally ported/expoxied my 92 and probably had 8 hours into it...but i want every last hp i can get, so $500 might sound steep but it is right in line for top of the line...

Not to turn vendor vs vendor here but I have seen both Tony and Ron's work side by side. Tony's is a $500 port job and Ron's is a $275 port job. That's not to say that you wont see gains from the cheaper job over an unported piece but they are not the same. This is an art form that is more akin to sculpting than measuring and cutting with a power tool.
