Default torque plate with stock head bolts?

Building a engine for a friend and since I'm using stock head bolts I need to use them (old ones for machining) with the torque plate. Do you guys that have done this just use the stock angle torque or a ft lbs number to get in the ball park? Probably have a similar type question for mocking up the main bolts during bearing measurments, etc. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

You can use them by using factory specs. It will get you close, but the will feel very suppugy so you can add a little but don't break them. Now if your doing a full race motor. Go buy ARP's and then you can use them on final assembly.

I know I'd rather use studs also, but it's more of a set it and forget it type build. I've just never used stock bolts at the machine shop.

Aren't the stock head bolts 1 time use torque to yield? 1 set of ARP bolts maybe be cheaper than 2 sets of factory headbolts.

Well yes they are, but thats the point of the topic. Nobody is going to buy new bolts to use on the torque plate during machine work. Same deal with the mains. I have used ARP stuff before, but thats not what he wants or needs.

That may not be what he wants but that IS what he needs....

Who's goes thru the trouble of torqueplate honing their block with cheesey OEM fasteners. That hardware is garbage IMO.

And yes....to properly size and check main bearing clearances you have to constantly torque to full spec, mic/dial-bore gauge your clearances....perhaps do it again (and again), before you disassemble it for final assembly and start over.

You cant do this without buying numerous OEM fastener kits or taking the plunge on ARP

I would simply tell your customer this is the way it is....

After all is said and done its also nice to know your critical engine fasteners don't feel like a rubber band at full torque.

While it sucks to have to pay the premium....to do this job right practically leaves you with no alternative.

Hope this helps....
