Default Oil Pump Question

The car is a 2001 Trans Am, the pump has about 113,xxx miles on it.

So today I changed my timing chain over to an LS2 chain today to try to solve an idle issue and for piece of mind. After I had everything back together I had no oil pressure(you have to remove the pump in order to change the chain). My question is about the pump itself. When I had my pump off I noticed that the gear inside the pump would not only rotate, but would also move side-to-side. Is that normal or does this mean that the pump happened to let go once I removed it? I reinstalled everything and triple checked everything related to the oil pump. I also noticed some scarring on the block near the oil pump outlet that may be keeping the pump from making a seal. Does anyone have any input here?

I did not, but I did make sure the old one was in place.
EDIT: the O-ring that was re-used has about 20k miles on it FWIW

Its an oring problem. Where it seats up to the block is the pressure side youll still have pressure. To answer your question, yes the pump internals can move around thats normal. If you take the back cover off youll see how it works. Basically the inner ring rides on the crank snout and spins in a larger outer ring. Id bet money that its just the oring though. Since its an ls2 chain you im sure didnt use a spacer. I would drop it back down and redo the oring. Be sure you put it on the pickup tube first not in the pump and dont pull it up with the bolt be sure it goes in straight first. For the peace of mind too Id just get a new oring. I like the green one (not sure if its the truck app or what) but its a little puffier than what comes out. Good luck with it.

,,at 113K miles you should have changed the oil pump while you were in there, and absolutely changed the O-ring. also the pump is a gerotor pump and that movement is perfectly normal. You should prime your oil system first, The easiest way to do this is to disconnect your coil pack harnesses, and pull your fuel pump fuse relay. Then get under the car and remove the oil filter, have someone turn the car over until you have oil coming out of the filter inlet port. Put the filter back on...then continue turning the car over until you see pressure start to build on the gauge (to be absolutely sure do it until you see oil coming out of the rockers),, then its OK to fire the engine. I have primed a couple of my LS1s this way and it has always worked for me. I always do it with the plugs out though. Hope this helps some.

I know some doent like them but I as very pleased with my Melling HF pump.
THe new pumpo will come with 2 oil rings make sure you use the correct color.
I like to put a little oil on the new o ring when installing. it helps it go in easear and seems to be less prone to snagging, rolling and pintching.

I guess I could update this. I got the new pump and oring put in and the oil pressure is up to around 55psi at idle and right at 80psi at WOT, so all-in-all a success. Thanks for the help guys!
