Default Crank pulley milled for double timing chain?

I recently installed a double roller timing chain from SDPC and I re-used the stock crank pulley - no problems for several months now.

I heard that if you replace the stock crank pulley with a smaller after-market unit that you must mill the new pulley if you are using a double roller chain.

Is this true; are there any small pulleys that do not require milling; my car is a 99 F-body and not a Vette....

Thanks...

I have an ASP pulley and a rollmaster double chain from SDPC and didn't have to mill the pulley at all. It went on just fine. I think this is only a problem for the Y-bodies.

Who sells the ASP pulley; did you have any issues like alternator or power steering, water pump etc.?

I also have an ASP pulley (got it from a sponsor, Thunder I believe) and a Rollmaster double roller (got it from SDPC), no issues at all andthe ASP pulley didn't need machining prior to installation.

My water pump is a Mezeire(street version), my voltage and power steering dropped minimally. The only thing I notice a drag on with the pulley is the power windows - kinda slow.

Well, I have a 1998 F-Body with the ASP pulley and the double roller timing chain, and I DID have to mill 3mm off of the pulley. With out the milling, the pulley would lock tight inside the oil pump housing and not spin. Although, recently I have heard that all the latest pulleys come already machined to fit the double roller, so the problem maybe becoming extinct.

Mine also hit, and so did my two buddies, we all have F-bodies so it's not just primarily Y-bodies with the issue. I still don't understand how other peoples don't hit, tolerences can't be off that much

Felton316 is correct. I just received my ASP pulley today and it's machined already.

I have the ASP pulley and double chain (on my F-body). I drove around for 20K miles without noticing any problems. When I removed the timing cover to replace the front seal, I noticed that the pulley had been slightly rubbing on the oil pump. It was just some slight nicks here and there but I went back and turned the pulley to make sure I never touch again.

just do it...its cheap insurance

I agree! I don't think most people even check fit their pulley before they put the front cover back on. My buddy did the same as you, when he went to do another cam swap is when he noticed it had been hitting. It really doesn't matter though if the new one's come machined already..
