Default Cam Advice

Hey guys, i recently bought the BBK chrome LT's and ORY, Now I'm looking to a cam swap. Ive done my reading and searching and I'm looking for a cam that will give that classic cammed sound, increase torque and HP but not sound over-aggressive and not kill my MPG as its a DD. Its a 00 WS6, with the M6. I'm thinking the TR224 package. How does that do with MPG and performance increases?

With an M6 your able to go with just about any cam in and do fine on MPG's. The TR224 is a proven cam that has earned it's place and would be an excellent choice. I would suggest anything in the 22X-low 230's simply because alot of those cams if you look at them don't have high rpm power bands. Usable power on a cammed DD makes it much more fun to drive around and doesn't affect mpg's too bad. I my run a 228/230 cam and still get 20mpg's with mixed city/hwy driving and got 26mpg's on my last trip to florida not too long ago and that was running about 85mph all the way with 4.10's. There's more to the sound of the cam than just duration also. The overlap can make them sound nastier than they are and so can exhaust. I have muffler type catback so mine sounds pretty tame for what it has in it.

If you go custom then you can have it cut to do whatever and sound however you want. What I spoke of above was off the shelf cams.

i also read something about springs only lasting 30k-40k after a cam and spring swap. Any truth to that?

Well that can get misconstrued. They will last as long as most, but what people mean when they say the springs only last X amount of miles is that after so long they become weaker which that is true for any spring that is compressed and decompressed at that rate. They just eventually get weak and cause valve float or worse case break. I would suggest to check them every 30-40k or replace them if you wish. There was a thread on here on how to test them. Cant remember what it said, but would be good to look up cause I'm nearing the 20k mark myself on some Comp 918's and am about to perform a head gasket repair so now would be a good time to test for any fatique.

From what a understand TR uses a version of the XE-R lobes which has a pretty aggressive ramp rate though....Im not wanting to start a arguments about whether they do or not. In the end the 150 every couple years isn't that bad to replace them every 40k.

The 224 is a proven cam time and time again. But i honestly would step up to more cam. I wouldnt go any smaller than like a TSP 228/228.
