Default 5.3 guys, what cam do you have?

Im doing a 5.3 in my 96 T/A and was wondering what you guys are using and how you like it. I picked up a cam from a friend and its a custom grind from Comp Cams so I wanted to see how well they compare. Specs are 224/230 .538/.538 114+4. I know its similar to the tr224 but Im just curious whats out there on the 5.3's.

Not a ton of 5.3L guys on this forum. Might check out the PerformanceTrucks link at the very top of the forum. I think you'll find most of them are running a good bit smaller duration than that!

Do you think that is due to the displacement, or the desire to keep truck-like torque levels?

I think it's several things: Displacement, compression, and weight of vehicle being the main three!

I don't see any thunder racing cams with specs like that.look at some comp LSr cams for 5.3,or look at a EPS cam for 5.3.what heads and intake are you using?

In an F-body you could go a little bigger than the trucks just due to the weight difference, but not by alot, IMO. I think that 224/230 would be pushing it in the F-body, but with a manual tranny behind it she'd probably be alright to drive still with a solid tune.

Matt, thanks for pointing out that part of the site. I found someone using the same duration cam but more lift and he did 365hp and around 350tq also on a 114 lsa.

My set up will be:
Cam 224/230 .538/.538 114+4 lsa
918 springs/hardened pushrods
Stock 862 heads
SLP adjustable double roller timing chain
LS1 Car Intake/TB
Stock injectors
04 GTO P+P MAF
Longtubes + Y pipe w/cutout
4L60E w/3400 stall
Stock 3.42 rear

It sounds like this is as big as I should go for now. My plans are to eventually turbo it and hopefully be able to use the same cam.

I'm in the same boat. Trying to find out what to go with in a 5.3. I thought they were the same as the ls1 pretty much except for the iron block

Performance trucks would likely have more info on 5.3s then here. 5.3s are talked about very rarely around these parts.

The TR220 on a 112 is a real popular cam for the trucks.

yes for the trucks 220 seems to be the sweet spot. for a car the 224 should work great.

5.3 has a 3.780 bore as apposed to a 3.898. Only thing similar is the stroke.

What about the .538 lift? seems a little low to me , even the stock ls6 cam has more lift than that.

The stroke is the same at 3.622" . Go over to Car Craft magazine and search chevy 5.3l . There are 2 or 3 articles where they put in a thumper cam and then heads and they end up with 459 flywheel hp and 398 tq .Good luck

I run a 218/224 .550/.550 114lsa it has a decent lope and pulls hard. never had it on the dyno so i cant say where it would peak but it is still pulling at 6000.
