The bowl shouldn't be widened anymore than 80% of the valve size. The short turn is where you can make a huge difference. Just smooth the turn and get rid of any high spots. The intake side can be improved by lowering the floor a little. Be careful gasket matching. Most people take out too much material. Leave yourself some wiggle room because the header when bolted down will distort. The exhaust can be opened up quite a bit so be ready to hog out some material.

Stock, but shows where you can and can not cut....a friend of mine uses this "chunk" of a head to flycut pistons in the block...I used them as a reference when I ported mine so I wouldn't hit a water jacket

I have a feeling you won,t find too many 243 heads in the salvage yard.you can get a set of heads of a 5.3 (free)to practice with.there are a couple of DIY head porting threads with pics .take it slow and post pic on here and the head porters will steer you in the right direction.

Aren't these the 799 heads that are the same as the 243's?

All 07-up 4.8/5.3's have either the 243 or 799 casting, so technically now they are always found on 5.3's. It may not be what comes to mind for you when someone says 5.3 heads but if you go to the dealership and pop the hood on any new 4.8/5.3 equipped truck you won't find a "5.3 head".

You want the throat at 90-91% on BOTH intake and exhaust. The bowl will be roughly valve size. The short turn on 243s can be layed back and will just keep picking up flow. Don't touch the floor other than the SSR, the gain is in the roof line.

You do pretty much the opposite of this and you'll see some success!

The point was a "5.3" head and an "LS6 style" 799/243 head are different castings with different numbers. They terms don't need to be used interchangeably.
