6.0 Cam choice
Alright i know theres probably a thread on here somewhere but with you guys I like personal help. Heres what i am looking to build. Ever since i got my first F body ive wanted an ls1. Now that my LT1 Z28 is Gone due to a massive fire, Nows my time.
LQ4 6.0 rebuilt stock bottom end with arp bolts ect.
I'd like to do a Cam only 6.0. I know the compressions low but with a smaller head gasket i think on the calculator i got a 9.8 as a max. I;m hoping to put this into a WS6. Very mild guys. So if its not a flawless combo im not crazy worried but i love hearing more expeirienced opinions. 6 speed car. 4.11's. LS6 intake and TB maybe ported..depends. I'm not sure about injector size. Car is a full weight car. probably 3700 with me in it. But the car is a street car with weekly racing. looking for good low with decent mid range and a little up high wouldnt hurt but i cant have everything=P but im sure she'll see some 6500-7000 rpms. So im looking for advice on Cams. Custom ground was a consideration. But i want to hear what you pro's out there have to say.

Since your staying with the lower compression dished pistons I'd look at a slightly shorter duration cam that had an earlier intake valve closing point so you bleed off less...maybe around a 228 with a good bit of advance.
How do you feel about milling your heads to give a little bump in compression?
For every full point of compression (going from 10:1-11:2 for instance) you are looking at an increase of 3-4% tq and hp acrossed the entire rpm range

Consider selling the 317s and buy a set of 243s? You've got good supporting mods in place to run a bigger cam with a decent set of heads...mine is a .238/.242 with around .600 lift and it runs and drives great. I'm at 10.55:1 comp with a milled set of 243s and a stock head gasket. Just a thought...

talk to Patrick-G for custom cam.I would mill or sell the 317s for some 243/799 heads.consider comp 54-455-11 if you retain you current compression ratio.it will make low end power .

I was thinking of ALL of these options guys. I'm trying to go on the cheap=/ i know cheap isnt power and ect ect. but I'm 18 and im looking for a mild cam only car for now. 9.8 isnt too bad i know its low but i was thinking of a comp 224/230. Better cam a bit smaller to help for my compression. I'd like to eventually with a tune see 400 or close. thanks for all the help

The 224/230 is a good cam for your setup but try to get it on tight LSA and with 4 degrees of advance to improve your dynamic compression.
I think that this cam from Cam Motion will give you good performance without dropping your dynamic compression but you will need a good set of springs to handle the high lift. A better idea would be milling your heads to pump your engine compression and going for a better cam.

And to answer your question, yes, I don't think that reaching 400rwhp will be difficult at all. You just need a custom cam to match your setup.

That looks like a decent cam. You dont think thats too big? I was thinking 113 or 114 lsa. But im not worried about springs or anything. everyhting will be upgraded appropriatly. will a cam like that make it worth less to shift at 7k? I've seen these 6.0's and other ls1's rev high reletivly easily im just wondering is going with such a small cam and reving so high counter productive? I just want a decent cam all around but it wont cry if i shifted at 7k.

Will it push you to 400rwhp? I don't think so.
You will need more compression to run a bigger cam that will help you reach your goal of 400rwhp without sacrificing drivability. If don't want to mill your heads (the cheapest way to pump your compression), then you will have to lower your goal.
Don't be fooled by numbers. I'd prefer to drive a car with a decent cam that makes 370rwhp with good manner and good throttle response rather than having a big cam with poor drivability and high dyno numbers. Of course, I'm talking here about a daily driven car not a weekend car dedicated for races.
A custom spec cam will give you the best of the two worlds. The highest dyno numbers with the best driving manner. Contact Patrick G to get a cam tailored to your needs.
For the shifting RPM, I think that with a small cam, your engine peak hp will be around 6,000 - 6,300. So, I don't think that shifting at 7,000 will be a problem if you have all the supporting mods (springs, retainers, lifters, ...etc). However, shifting at 6,600 - 6,800 would be more than enough to keep you in your power band especially that you won't feel any power increase past those RPM's. You can put your rev limiter at 7K and shift at 6,600 - 6,800.
You have to decide on whether you will mill your heads or not (and how much you will be milling them) before making a decision about the cam.

Just saw a guy with an lq9 stock heads (10:1) with a 232/238 Cam and ls1 intake and stock TB and Single exhaust. So with the right cam I feel 380-400 hp is a doable goal. Not to say im basing everything off numbers i just want a nice street car. (with some *****)

$750 got my 4.030" flat top coated pistons with 6cc valve reliefs...that would bump your compression up...should be able to get standard bore pistons for alittle cheaper

I'd forget about hp numbers and go for torque...throw in a smaller cam with tight lsa ( maybe 109-110lsa) and decient lift....that would help out with the lower compression

I am always thinking about torque thats why im asking for a decent cam option to keep me decent power up high and shifting high but still having a nice low grunt and by that i mean not making peak torque at 5+k rpm...like MS3 ect. i am not expecting big block stunt pulling low rpm torque just something with Nice torque down low. i was hoping for 380 tq and 400 rwhp

mill your 317 and figure your static compression before you get a cam.with a stock 7.5 rear you are asking for trouble ,unless you plan on a rear end upgrade.ls6 intake ,torquer 2 TSP cam mite break 400rwhp.I like the patrick-g cam route better.
