Default Oil in intake ??

Today I removed the intake from my 98 corvette LS1 to prep for painting. This was supposed to be a 24,000 mile engine that was passed around to 3 previous owners that never got around to find it a home in a car and reselling it, now I am prepping it to go in my 68 camaro.

When I removed the throttle body I found a small amount of engine oil in the bottom of the intake. I had the engine on a stand upside down changing the oil pan out for 2-3 hours and was thinking maybe some oil found its way to the top of the motor ?? Proceeded to remove the intake and found black carbon like steaks down all the intake passages for the first 2-3 inches. (Pic attached).

Not real sure what to think, was this engine using oil or did oil run up top while I had it upside down and what appears in intake passages normal?

Probably sucking it through the crappy pcv system that all the ls cars have. I wouldnt worry about it. If it would make ya feel better, send it to me and I will use it and report back.

You can use the LS6 PCV setup (MUCH cleaner than the LS1 crap), and catch cans to be safe, or just delete the PCV system entirely and use breathers.

What kind of catch can would you guys recommend? I have a lq9 cam fast intake and ls6 valley cover with a breather on the oil cap.

Oh yeah, Im aware. I dont move off the full mark between oil changes, so Im not too worried. But the upgrade is cheap insurance for now.

I agree with above, the LS6 system with a catch can is about the best way to go. Unless you ditch the PCV. I have to retain it due to emissions crap.

Thank`s for info Guys, LS6 pcv set up and catch can it is. Just glad to find out its not as serious as I thought it could be. Wanted rid of the old unsightly pcv mess anyway. Where is a good place to mount a catch can? AC compressor will mount on passenger head where it would be most convenient, I imagine below the head level anywhere else is ok??

I have one from Elite Engineering which I like, but it is not one of the cheaper options.

Here is one many threads on catch cans.
