Default 5.3 oil pressure "crazy"

2001 5.3 100k miles 224/224 .570 lift on a 112
Vic jr,3500 stall
10w40 oil with delco filter
Oil pressure reading pulled from above filter has a mechanicle gauge

Added a quart of lucas and made this issue worse

Cold start takes 10-15 seconds to move the gauge and goes to 20psi stays there untill engine temp gets to 160 then jumps to 35 at a 950rpm idle rpm has no effect untill it gets to 195* then I have 37-38 psi at idle and 65-70 at 3k+

Lifters randomly 'tick' also
Never seen oil pressure get higher when hot what's up guys?

Being a mwchanical gauge it will take a few seconds to build pressure. As for the oil pressure theirs alot of guys here running that much pressure. The lifter may just have something in like its dirty. Wouldnt hurt to do A engine flush exspcially with the higher miles.

Try a different gauge.

I was all freaked out with my 84,000 mile LQ4 when I fired it up. idle PSI was 20, PSI at 4000 was 30.

Then I realized my mechanical oil pressure gauge was a royal POS.

Have you checked the scanner to see what the oil pressure sensor is reading, or are you carbed?

It wouldn't bother me so bad if it came up quicker, it takes it at least twice as long as it did the 306 ford motor I pulled out ,ill try flushing it and change the oil again

I've had this gauge on 2 differant motors with no issues, the low pressure issue is only when the motor is cold, after it is up to temp everything is fine and yes it is carb'd forrgot to mention that. Is it possible that the oil is just to thick? Or could it be a issue with the pickuop o ring or oil pan gasket?

When I was buying an oil filter for my 5.3L I noticed in the book that they sell 2 different filters , 1 with an antisiphon valve and 1 without . At least that's what the book said , I did'nt look for the 1 without . Also the little line that goes to the gauge has air in it unless You screw around with it to get that air out it's possible that could mess with pressure readings ? That o-ring has been known to cause all kinds of problems ,,,,,,,,,,You never know . Good luck .

Interesting about the filter ill keep that in mind

I did use a differant filter this time along with the 5w30 the 'cooler' temp oil pressure is a lot bettter and rises faster but i haven't gotten to cold start it yet and I will update then

Well still takes a while cold, rattles during this time also, but oil pressure is up all around
