I think most people would say the graphite seal better unless the surfaces are immaculate. They are a bitch to clean up though.

Yes graphite is better when you have imperfect surfaces, but he needs to have the heads cleaned and or machined already so that takes care of the heads. The block can be a pain to clean but its just time consuming, if there were metal headgaskets there in the first place it would be such a pain. Just need a gasket scraper, razor blade, very fine sandpaper and patience.

Just an update: I got a nice set of 243 LS2 heads and got everything off the car. I decided to do poly motor mounts since everything is off the car.

I had to move over the springs that came with my cam over to the new heads

A little gift for the wife

Taking off the motor mounts was a real PITA, Poly's should be arriving in a few days

I'm trying to find out what Header gaskets I need, would regular LS1 gaskets work or do I need the LS6 gaskets, the exhaust port on the heads is slightly different

the stock metal gaskets would work fine IMO but i'm not sure if the header gaskets are the same from your 806 heads to the 243's

Good choice on the heads, and man those motor mounts are a huge pita, wait till you drill out the rivets in the clamshell and bolt them together, then try to line up the engine, the fun isn't over yet! On the motor mounts get a bolt through one mount then pry on the engine with a giant pry bar to get the other mount to line up..

Build looks like it is going well, you should almost thank the wife for un-intentionally helping you get new toys. The blood and sweat part of it sucks but you will be happy when you are done that you did the heads and mounts

just an update, I finally got the motor mounts in after alot of swearing and crying, getting those mounts lined up in 100+ degrees by yourself in your driveway is not fun. Put in new LS7 lifters and new trays as well and got it all back together last night. It was dark when I finished so I'll start it up today and check for leaks.

Soaked the Lifters in oil for about 30 minutes before putting them in.

Comparison shot old and new lifters

My helper cleaning up some parts

I painted my Waterpump, Throttle Body and valve covers with Black Engine Enamel while they were off

anything I need to watch for when I start it up for the first time?

Dude, in that last photo, the rag was still in front of the throttle body. Yes, it was far away, but, still in front. I would keep all rags completely off the entire engine after all that you have been through! LOL. Nice choice on all the parts. I hope it run's better than ever. Good luck!

those were the old 806 heads when I was pulling off the springs. they're probably headed for the scrapyard, the 243's were resting on soft towels laid on their side.

Can I make one last suggestion? Don't let your wife have a set of keys to your car, and keep your keys on you at all times. Also for good measure employ a few of these.

Why is it that the little kids always do the best job cleaning parts to look like new.

I started her up everything is running good. I took her on a few short trips and no leaks or noises. I like the new Poly Mounts alot, the motor use to shake around alot and now its almost perfectly still, no vibration in the car either.

Posting for future reference only ... 2001 LS6 did not have the hollow valve stems, started with 2002 LS6.

BTW ... if I work on my car and leave the battery connected, I put a big assed sign on the windshield that says "DO NOT START !!" , and also hide the keys to avoid a mishap like this.

You went through hell, but got it upgraded in the process.

Glad you had everything go your way on the resurection. I have similer mounts on my vette, you are right, they make the car feel completely different. Smoother.
