02 Z06 Cam setup, am I on the right track???
Hey guys, been fishing around the forums for some time now, I dont know a whole lot about cams but ive been reading up and talking to shops and such and I now believe i have everything i need to do the cam swap. Ive got all these parts ready to do a cam install, hopefully doing it this weekend. I just wanted to get anyone's professional advice or opinions on if I should do any other upgrades or get any other parts before I begin the install. Here is a list of what im throwing on as of now...
Comp Cams LSR #54-459-11 - 231 239 duration at 113degress lobe seperation
Comp Cams Kit #26926TS-KIT - Dual valve spings, titanium retainers, steel valve locks, valve seals, and spring seats
SLP 25% lightweight underdrive pulley
New GM crank bolt
New belts for pulley Gates belt 6pk1970 & Gates belt 4pk1040
160 degree thermostat
New waterpump and gasket
New oil pump and seal
new stock timing chain
new timing cover gasket
At the moment I have a vararam intake, long tube headers, catless xpipe, and b&b catback. Stock LS6 heads.
Is there anything else you recommend for this cam swap, like is it necessary to do rocker arms, or new lifters, or an ls2 timing chain or cam gears or anything else? Also are heads a worthwhile upgrade over the stock ls6? Im not trying to go crazy here just wanted a nice little boost of gains and a fun lopey idle Car has 110k miles on it. it will be getting tuned immediately after the install
MUCH APPRECIATED!
Jeff

I am doing a new timing chain, I have already bought one, Im just curious if the OEM stock chain is acceptable, I hear some people reccomending the ls2 chain or others as an upgrade, but wasnt sure if its really worth it??

Its just gonna suck if you put it all back together and it ticks. The gm ls7 lifters work well and are not to expensive. Yea the heads come off but ive done a head swap in my driveway its very doable.

Urrrrfgh I really was hopin to do the heads at a later time. If I gotta pull them then what's a good upgrade that I can do thats most cost effective? I've already gone way over buget on the cam swap

Does it make it easier to do the cam if im pulling the heads, I wasnt planning on pulling them? And what should I do as far as a upgrade for the heads that's affordable. And should I do rocker arms?

It's only easier doing the cam when pulling heads because you don't have to worry about a lifter dropping. With 110k its a good time to do lifters and trays. It doesn't mean that they are going to go bad, they might last another 20k or they might last a few more weeks. Its just a judgement call you have to make yourself. For the rocker arms, I would do the comp cams trunion upgrade (i think they are about $130). And if they were my heads and coming off, they would definitely get sent out for porting. But that gets expensive and might put you way over your budget.
Or you can just go as you originally planned and everything could work just fine. The other stuff like lifters and rocker upgrades aren't necessarily needed, but they are nice insurance to have on a high mileage motor still running original parts.

You should invest in rockers and here is why: If youre camshaft is going to exceed in lift .550 then youre stock rockers should be replaced period! The comp trunion upgrade may make the rocker less likely to have its needle bearings come apart in youre engine but the bottom line is that will not increase the rockers capacity for lift and you will ruin youre valve guides in those ls6 heads. Since to me it sound like youre on a budget a set of rockers will be far less expensive to install then to pull youre heads off down the road and have them repaired or replaced. There is a very interesting article in gmhtp about this issue so feel free to look this info up also i made a post and put that info in it for everyone to see. The valve guides in most ls style heads are composed of a powered metal which will not hold up at lift past .550. Search stock rocker tech up in the search box this info will come and hopefully help u in a descision.
