Default Piston Advice

Earlier while trying to put together my bottom end, I was using my new proform ring compressor on the first piston and it decided to destroy my brand new rings for my lq4 pistons. So now my questions start.

The motor is a

04 LQ4
Stock LS3 heads
Custom cam
Nitrous

Im gonna run nitrous, and now im thinking about forged pistons since this happened.

Is there a cheap forged piston rod set up for a 2004 LQ4 that will take some spray(around 200hp)?

Should I just go ahead and stroke it while its apart?

Should I atleast have it bored out a little?

Just give me some ideas of what you would do In my situation.

Thanks.

Dustin

Was it a tappered ring compressor ??? Where they file fit rings ?? (4.005")
Also there is no such thing as a cheap forged piston especially for an LS.
If you're gonna get slugs then YES just get a balanced rotating assembly
in a kit and stroker it right away...especially if you're dead set on using the
LS3 heads. Most on here will agree that they flow alot and make dyno power
but don't work real well on the street w/ 4.0" bore engines (shrouding). Also
the intake runners are 265 cc which contributes to slow port speed, so extra
cubes (402:4.005x4.0;408:4.030x4.0;or 413:4.005x4.1) will help with intake
velocity to make good streetable torque. Hope your custom cam has 12-14
degrees more exhaust duration to work w/ls3s poor EX. to IN. ratio...best
of luck

I am dead set on the LS3 heads since I already have them. My cam is a custom cam ground to the specs of 222/234 .566/.576 112 LSA. I would love to have all the extra cubes to build off of, but I am unsure as to if I should go with a .030 piston and rod set up or if I should go with the 408 set up now and later down the road add a bigger cam and ported heads onto my 408. Either way, I want the internals to be forged so it can better suit my Nitrous plans. I realize that it wont be cheap, but I don't really want to spend $500+ on a set up pistons and still need to buy rods and a crank.

http://www.texas-speed.com/p-903-tsp...-assembly.aspx
this would really help those heads or else Diamond offers
a standard bore (4.065) LS3 replacement piston which uses an old school
small block con rod which you could rebalance your stock crank. I feel the
stock crank properly balanced will hold the power you're after w/200 shot...
but you'ld still only be at 376 inches. The big ls3 valves would be unshrouded
however I think the extra 26 cubes will PULL harder on the large intake runner
Hope this makes sense...don't want you to be discouraged cuz those are nice
heads. That cam seems right on BTW

So just to verify, 376 or 408? Thanks for the quick replies though dude.

I'd definitely go 408 if you can afford the extra coin for the crank. If you have
a tight budget but NEED the forged slugs then punch that block .065 for the
standard bore of a 6.2 and hopefully the smallish cam will help the low end
torque. If you go 376 try like hell to get 11.0:1 comp w/thinner gaskets and
a head mill.

Ok, I think you have talked me into it, haha. I will do the 4.065 bore and a 4.0 crank for 415 ci small block Would you guys still feel safe running nitrous on this motor? Where will be the *cheapest* place to get my new rotating assembly? I figure I can always step up in cam and have my heads done if I get the motor running good. How do I know which pistons I will need? 2cc,4cc flat dome?

Go to one of the compression calculators on-line and make sure You have the right #'s to plug in and go from there .

For your rotating assembly I deal w/ Competition Products right here in
Oshkosh, WI but they are not a site sponser. Texas Speed will be the best
option otherwise....man that thing will RIP w/415 inches
