Default How is 97-98 different?

I have been reading and have seen that the valve covers are different I was wondering if there is anything else that is different.

Essentially, no. The "perimeter bolt" heads are the biggie. As with every year, there were always slight changes in the ports and/or chamber. The rod bolts and pushrods were troublesome. GM put out a couple of tech bulletins to their dealers about replacing them if there was a problem. They advised to tell people to keep it under 5800 RPM, if I remember correctly. Why? Some rod bolts broke, and bent pushrods were fairly common.

SO will heads off a newer LS1 go on mine? I was gonna get AFR heads if they ever get there act together or will I just have to get different valve covers?

all ls1 heads are interchangable. you'll just need accompianing vavle covers and/or coil pack brackets.

I know lots of people with 98 ls1's doing 7K rpms daily for 2-3 years now with NO PROBLEMS or oil consumption issues

Only if you want stuff like valve covers or spacers.

just get whatever heads you want the appropriate vavle covers/coil packs :shrug:
