Strange as you need to turn the crank to install the rods & pistons.

Is this engine on a stand? If so, spin the entire engine upside down on the stand and listen for anything knocking around inside. Me thinks something was left inside like a socket.

it's an m6, still in the car. i actually went out and looked at it today. you can turn the crank and then there's a solid "clunk" when it stops, like there's a solid mass in the way.
also, the oil pan is bent. :/
not sure what the previous guy did to this, he said he took it to a reputable shop to have the bottom end done. it arrived with the heads on it and the springs installed.
the mechanic is sure it's a hung rod.

Time for you to get a different mechanic. Anybody else with me on this one?

What I'm gathering FWIW, is he bought the motor from some body and his mechanic installed it. How do you pre lube a LS motor anyway?

"Preparing" means different things to different people.

Being kinda new here we might jump on you a bit but we'll still try to help you.

Post up those pics. Set plans to lift the engine to replace the oil pan, oil deflector and oil baffle. and anything else that might've been damaged. DON'T USE A FRAM OIL FILTER.

You bought this car while deployed, and it was suposed to be running for you when you returned from Afghanistan, right? Was the oil an on the car when you took it to the second mechanic?

Well, when the heads are off and you are assembling the shortblock and bullshitting/having a few cold ones during this process, it can be done. And of course I didn't find this out until I went to degree the cam with the heads on....

I bought the car on deployment (without coming out to look at it myself, and i've been kicking myself in the *** for it for months now). Paid for it in december of last year. when march rolled around and the car still wasn't ready, i had it shipped here, and have been going through the process of collecting all the parts that i didn't get.
The vehicle showed up with the motor in it. Rods and pistons already installed. Oil pan was already on it when I brought it to my mechanic. I'll try to get pictures of everything today.

when the OP stated the oil pan is damaged. this makes me belive that the engine has a broken connecting rod,,along with saying that the crank will only turn so much in each direction then stopping.

My guess would be that who ever sold the OP the car knows this and took what engine parts he could sale off and gave the OP the rest ,,selling the car to the OP as a unfinished project.

I hope this isn't the case ,,but it sure sounds like it is.

I had the head of a valve snap off once and was in the cylinder. When you looked at the springs you could not tell anything had happened. Could be anything. Need to pull the engine and either flip it over and pull the pan or pull the heads.

It's a distinct possibility...it seems like all the hardware on this motor is mismatched. Like the last guy just had a big bucket of bolts and figured, hell, this fits here, and this'll go in here, must be okay.
i'll update when i have more news on mine and find out what it is.

solved the issue: the previous mechanic never clearanced the pistons. The solid "thunk" was the piston skirt striking the crankshaft.
