Default A few questions about my 5.3L LM7

What's up everyone, I'm new to the site and V8's for that matter...

I've been building four cylinders and I6's since I started working on cars. I drive a Nissan 240SX and I build most of my friends cars. So obviously I'm used to boost, and I'm used to building motors that are much different than my new LM7.

I'm swapping the LM7 into my 240sx, and I have the block all torn down and it looks great. I plan on using LS1 intake/rail/injectors, porting the stock heads, etc etc.

I just have a few questions though.

1. Which cams fit the LM7? (LS1..LS2..etc) I know the LM7 is a member of the LSX family, but does that mean all cams out of every other LS fits my LM7?

2. Do Z06 springs fit into my motor?

3. Which cam do you think will be my best bet? I was looking at the TR220, but I'm not sure. I plan on using this car mostly for drag, but it will still be a street car so I don't want too wicked of a cam.

Thanks

The series of motor depends on what year it is from. There are Gen 3 cathedral port V8s from about 97-07 (roughly) and 07/08 and up is Gen 4 which is similar but not exactly the same and it is square port (talking about the cylinder head intake ports). If you have a Gen III 5.3 then everything pretty much swaps over from Gen 3s. Meaning all Gen 3 4.8, 5.3, 5.7 and 6.0 stuff is interchangeable. Heads, cams, intakes, pans, valve covers can all be swapped around between those engines. So yes, Z06 springs will fit (assuming you mean yellow beehives). Depending on what else you have done or are planning to do we can get you lined out with a good cam suggestion. I would not choose a TR220 as it is too small for a racing/car application in my opinion.

I have a Gen III and it's cathedral port. And yeah I was talking about the yellow beehives.

What cam would you suggest then?

My setup is:

- Gen 3 5.3L LM7
- LS1 Intake/throttle body/fuel rail/injectors
- Daft Innovations aftermarket 1 3/4" longtube headers
- GTO Oil pan cause I needed to be able to clear my crossmember
- Ported 5.3 heads
- DIY Intake
- Z06 valve springs
- Aftermarket cam (still need help choosing)
- T56 tranny...daft innovations mount kit, fuel setup, clutch master cylinder

What rear gear? What race weight? What rpm are you wanting to shift at? I would definitely ditch the yellow beehives in favor of a .625 or .650 spring. That will really open up your cam choices because the yellow beehives are only good for .550. I would also consider (if budget allows) and LS6, Typhoon, or BBK intake. They flow much better then a 97-00 LS1 car intake.

Rear gear is 4.08
Weight is 2700
Not too sure which rpm, maybe 6500-7000?

Oh good god, they are gonna have a time with you.

I would suggest a cam in the high 230s region. MS3s seem to work well, as do TRexs. A custom cam might do well because of the very light weight. You have a lot of options as you are not limited by weight like f-bodies are.

Alright. And I should definitely ditch the Z06 springs, and get an LS6 intake as well? Good to know..

Here's a 240SX with that TRex cam you just mentioned...

And one with the MS3 as well!

Hey, so I'm doing an LM7 swap in my 91 hatch.
I JUST picked up a 2000 suburban lm7 today with 87k
Miles today. I plan on running a t56 tranny,
Ls1 clutch and pp, but I'm stumped on a few things,
The main thing is what flywheel do I use? And are you able to fit a ls1
Or stock radiator in your bay? There's isn't a lot
Of info in my area on these. Do the ls1 swap kits
Work for the lm7? Any help would be great.
What is your lm7 out of?

Sorry for the 21 noob questions lol I wouldn't ask
For help if I didn't need it.

Ls1 clutch and pp, but I'm stumped on a few things, the main thing is what flywheel do I use......Do you already have the clutch setup or are you looking for options?
And are you able to fit a ls1 Or stock radiator in your bay? It will be tight but you can use your 240sx rad if you want and you will need to swap out accessories for F-body or Vette accessories. You will also need to swap out the intake unless you want to chop your hood. If i may suggest look into a Dual Pass such as AFCO or something similar. I have seen a few people with cooling issues and the dual pass seems to do the trick.
There's isn't a lot of info in my area on these. Do the ls1 swap kits
Work for the lm7?.....Yup, they are the same dimensions as the LS Block
Any help would be great.
What is your lm7 out of?......2005 Pickup so I think I floating wrist pins and upgraded rods

Check out SilviaV8.....lots of swap info on that forum as well for us doing these types of conversions.
