Default Cam suggestions

Want to run a cam in my 2000 z28. Mods are LTs with 3inch Borla all the way back, CAI, and street tune. Wondering what cam would give me the best results while still being friendly with stock heads and stock torque converter. (will do head and stall work sometime in future but for now....$$$) Of course will get new springs, pushrods, etc. I was suggested the MS3 cam by Texas Speed and Performance, any other suggestions?

A cam will give you more power but a stall converter will probably cut more time off your 1/4 times. Kind of depends what you are looking for. A big cam with a stock converter is not a fun car to drive.

The old LPE GT11 would be a good choice if you are not planning to change heads or converter up front.

get a stall first .the cams listed above aren't fun with out a higher rpm stall.who will tune it .you get a cam and push rods last after you have all the other parts.

Not to still the thread... but I'm doing my cam swap in 2 weeks- I have a Torquer V2 and 3600 ptc coverter and all the other supporting mods. I have been tossing around the Idea of changing up to an MS3. I currently DD my car, but only till the end of the year then it'll be for fun only. I don't mind a little rougher driving car.... so my question is, should I do it.

To the OP... I would suggest a 02+ ZO6 cam with the stock TC. Anything larger and you'll hate life until you get Higher stall converter

Do a stall first, otherwise you're going to hate driving you car until you get a high stall TC put in.

I wouldn't bother with a cam until that converter is changed. Save the money until you can do the cam and converter at the same time. IMO.

If you put a MS3 in with a stock stall your car will not really be any faster. A 3600+stall is not only a compliment, but requirement for an MS3.

MS3 really? WOW 237/242 is a big *** cam for stock heads.... depending on which LSA you choose you are going to have some PTV issues with that cam. i understand alot of people are going to tell you you can run that cam without fly cutting but the truth of the matter is most people don't measure PTV when installing their cams and if your not within the accepted PTV tolerances you are just one miss shift away from destroying your motor and costing yourself alot of money. YOU MUST ALWAYS MEASURE PTV CLEARANCE when installing a cam REGARDLESS of what others say .... with the MS3 you WILL most likely need to fly cut to be within the accepted tolerances, i sure hope TSP told you that when you called them.
my advise is go with a smaller duration cam that will match your stock heads thus fore giving you more power... remember making big HP is a formula (size of cam needs to match flow of the heads) its not a dick measuring contest (whose got the biggest cam). ive seen guys with a 228R cam and proper supporting mods walk cats with a bigger stick and non supporting mods (i.e. heads that dont flow the cam)

The ms3 will fit just fine.no fly cutting needed on a ls1 with stock heads. Even tsp will tell you there is no need to fly cut.i run a ms4 and im sure clearance is close but has been just fine.op IMO you may say you don't mind your car driven rough but trust me you will mind after awhile.there are much better cams out there than the Ms cams. You want something that will give you a good powerband on the street.the Ms came are going to put all your power higher in the rpm range.im on my phone right now and its real hard to type when i get back to my comp i will clean up what im trying to say.

I agree with powersports post.but i will say a big cam car set up right will haul ***. But its way more than just a big cam .and will end up costing more in the long run. But i know lots of guys with big cams and spray blowing the doors off alot of head and cam cars

Save some more pennies and do it right, so you don't have to worry later.
