Default Double Roller Timing Sets In LS1

I'm in the process of looking for a Cam for my LS1 and a coworker said that I should get a Double Roller Timing Set. I saw some cams that say you need to have a Double Roller Timing Set with their cam. Is this just to get you to buy their timing set or do they recommend it for a certain reason? I installed one when I put a stock cam in my '72 Olds 350 just because a different coworker said I should have it in there and since the chain was worn out I bought it. Are there any clearance issues in using one with a stock front cover? Any performance gains or losses?

Do a C5R single chain and save yourself some headache making stuff fit.

For big horsepower stuff, by all means go double. But for the average build, a good single will take care of the job and be MUCH easier to install! Now people will come in and say it's easy to install a double roller....but most simply throw it in and do not worry about pick-up tube alignment into the pump and the like, and then blame the cam, pump, etc when their oil pressure sucks.

I believe with most if not all doubles you have to space the oil pump out from the chain. That is why Matt said above you can have pickup tube alignment issues. So yes there can be clearance issues..

Just do a good single chain and be done with it.

hmmm, i have a rollmaster double roller, installed a ls6 ported oil pump with spacers. the ONLY issue i had was pick up tube flange that bolts to main stud had to be opened up a bit to move forward a bit cause of spacers. otherwise it went in well!

Also front cover fitment issues. You might have to grind out a little material. All this if you use stock pump. Still, not a big deal. . Dry sump doesn't need any of that.

From what I've seen, you will typically have clearance issues in the front cover and the back of the oil pump outlet,

Take a look at SLP's double roller and pump combo. Comes with the necessary spacers. Their ad says doesn't hit the cover. Maybe give them a call about fitment.

BTW I think the single roller should have a dampner and a double roller doesnt need one.

I would do a single, my friend did a double and cracked his front cover when he put it on because the oil pump hit it.

Will a stock GM chain work well or are they not strong enough? What would the horsepower be rated on it? I plan on being in or close to the 400hp range. A new stock one should hold up, right?

Ive seen plenty of cars in excess of 400hp use the factory timing set with no issues, but its definitely an inexpensive upgrade to go ahead and do since everything else is already apart.

What's your recommendation for strength, reliability and value? Do you rec the C5R or feel it is a bit overkill?

Not trying to thread hijack but all the C5R talk made me curious of the above.

Doubles are important in the area of valvetrain lash. I road race. The quick off and on with the gas pedal makes that chain slap around with some serious lash. A double roller along with a gaurd is what I went with. There is almost no slack in the double at rest. This keeps the valve timing events very accurate and piston friendly. Power also remains consistent with Throttle stabbing.
