OK...I had a little translation problem with "vert" then. Apparently it is convertible not converter. Anyway, Torque is your friend.

If you go with some of the better/newer lobes currently available, you'll make more power with a smaller more streetable cam. A smaller cam with all thing being equal will also have less exhaust stink, since your driving a convertable.

A EPS, LS 222/226, (-2* overlap) would be a good option.

Another good option is a custom grind, 223(lsl)/226(lxl) 114lsa (-3.5* overlap) or with a 113lsa(-1.5* overlap).

Will a cam upgrade benefit performance with out replacing the heads?
I don't think I've EVER seen a cam swap (from the OEM cam) where it didn't make more power.
