Default Putting $3k into the LS1... need some collaboration here!

Putting the SS away for the season. Putting it away this week until around march

36000 miles
A4 new tranny in 05
Corsa eshaust
SLP Lid (ss package)
thats about it for powertrain

Lookin for a good cam, not massive gains, but a good sound
Need to find a good tuner around here in chicagoland
Getting a cam, I'm aware the engine will be open for other thigns to be installed
Ill be paying a shop to do these things once I find a good one, so what else should I add for some torque gains and good sound?
3K Is the limit, I also have strict emmissions in my area
Very novice when it comes to the tuning process, pointers appreciated.

Lookin for muscle not riceyness

what year is your car ?look at the dyno section for power levels you mite like to achieve.you mite consider a thunder racing or a TSP 224 cam pkg.get a ls6 intake if you don't have one.

I would do longtubes and ory before a cam but with a cam your going to need a stall. And like he said if you can do the work yourself I would. The labor is going to eat up most of your budget.

If you do a cam go ahead and do lifters... its one of those things you dont "have" to do but its cheaper to do it now than to get your car tuned and on the way home collapse a lifter and have to spend all that much more money. and like someone else said, save your money and do it yourself. This guy learned the hard way. But if the car is all stock and a pre - 01 then get an LS6 intake, long tubes, and a new tune and you could get upwards of 340 at the wheels. Just remember, always expect to end up forking out more than originally planned! if you plan on spending only 3k, then id only spend 2k on new parts. trust me, when its all said and done that other grand will end up somewhere un-expected.

Stall (700-900)
Longtubes (pacetter)(250ish)
Y-pipe (tsp)(???)
ls6 intake (300-400)
Ported tb (100ish)
Lid (100-180)

Have the car retuned

If you just do bolt ons now I wouldn't go all out and have it dyno tuned if you plan on doing a cam later on. I'd do a mail order tune from frost. That'll save you 150 to 300 bucks depending on the shop.

Sorry its an 02, id like to do more exhaust and header work but i have Strict as heck emissions. couldve swore i put i have hard emissions here, so im pretty limited.
I like those handheld tuners, but im told a tuning shops tune would be much better? I alos need to find a good shop in the chicagoland area.

im partial to keeping it the way it is then supercharging 50000 miles from now.

find a used P1 or D1 supercharger kit on here. should be able to find a P1 for around that, then tune it. 8psi on a completely stock motor..ie, heads, cam, exhaust, you should still hit ~450whp or so..

but hey....im biased

for 3k you would be pushing it to just do a cam/stall/and tune for 3k if your paying labor, then you still would have stock exhaust on the car........

As previously said, I would just do some bolt ons to the car. Some stainless headers, high flow cats, lower gears, a professional tune (probably check with speed inc since your in their area) hand held tuners are garbage, and some micky thompson et streets on the rear.

I agree with almost all the guys here:

Lid, LS6 Intake, Longtubes/Y-pipe, Stall, Cam, Valvetrain, Tune

And do the work yourself - you'll save a HUGE amount over the latter and have a great setup within your price range.

What are your emissions like? Only OBDII? If so, you will completely fine, just make sure you find a good tuner in the area.

If you still opt out and want the work done from someone, I have a guy in Joliet that does my work, does it out of his house and has a full shop and will work on anything, he races nitro bikes. This summer he rebuilt my trans on my 2001 Denali for $1100 (that was for everything) and when the check engine light came on in our STS, I took it to our not so friendly Cadi dealership first and was told it would be around $3000 to fix, this guy did it for $750 (broken valve spring-a $5 part-had to take off the top of the engine), I have sent numerous friends/family to him and everyone is happy and he guarantees his work. I'm looking to do something similar to what you are doing, have had my car for 9 years and haven't done anything to it, but this winter it's going to his place for a few add ons. PM me if you want his number.

Call speed inc in schaumburg or straightline in new lenox. Tell them how much money you have and what your goals are.
