Welcome to LS1tech!
Although LS7 coils are "better" than LS1 coils, they will not directly swap in. The most powerful coils you can use are the heat-sinked truck coils. You may have some power and/or engine response improvements when moving to them. It's all here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...ke-sticky.html

As coils are an external part, you shoulda posted this in the external engine forum, not the internal.

Negative. Different bracket. Different harness.
It's all here guys: https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/1249222-truck-ignition-coil-upgrade.html

There is no power/advantage to swapping out your LS1 coils to the other coils-except the heat sinked truck coils-maybe. If your engine is in good running condition and you can't get a tune to take advantage of the better (truck) coils, you might as well stay with the LS1 coils.
Side note: Coils do not "wear out" or have diminishing performance over time and use. They work or they don't. Occasionally, a coil can be intermittent, it work fine now, stops working altogether later then works perfectly fine again later. If your existing coils are working, just keep them. And DON'T make the mistake of buying MSD LS style coils. They fail.

hey paul, you might be able to help me!! I have ls3 style coils and ls1/ls6 wiring harness, will just plugging in the harness work? also do they need to be plugged in a certain order? or do I need another harness? I am using a MSD 6012 ignition box and harness, the engine is a 5.3 from a 2008 gmc pick-up.thanks

LS7 coils are the same as LS3 coils. However, they have the "LS2" and later connectors on them. You say you have the LS1/6 wiring harness, if this is the ignition coil harness, you've probably discovered they won't connect to the coils. You'll need the later wiring harness, GM number 12601824, one for each side. These will plug into the coil connectors on the MSD harness shown here. There's no order to them, just plug and play. If you're not using the GM coil brackets and you need to know which coil is for which cylinder, the coils each have one unique colored wire in the plugs coming from the MSD box and their instruction sheet shows the list.
