Default Ported vs. Regular Oil Pump

I know you can pick up the ported version for 120 or the regular version at GM Parts Direct for 56, is there a need for the ported version on a H/C setup?

i would say either a stock ls6 or ported ls6 pump both should get ride of the inherent problems of your stock 98 pump if in fact you are replacing it...personally Im not even gonna bother I figure my motor will be on borrowed time anywayz might as well go out in style lol

I went ported....its worth the couple of extra psi for the whole safety insurance factor....you really only need 10psi per 1000rpm(or so the experts say)...but its nice to know that when you wrap the engine up to 7000 that you have good oiling.

I plan on going with a new LS6 oil pump on my next engine project, I don't think a ported one is necessary. If you want one and fell better about it go for it. I've never regretted going with a Katech ported LS1 oil pump on my 99 T/A that had less than ~35,000 at time of H & C.

If your 98 has a lot's of miles(35,000+) on it it's probably out of the "danger zone".

I just turned 27000, so I will get one or the other. Anymore opinions?

I have the 02 LS1/6 pump and it carries plenty of oil pressure. The GM parts guy told me it was an upgraded part number from the 99z.

It was in the 60 dollar range. If it is good enough for a z06 I felt it was going to be ok for me.

You won't have to worry about this on the '07 engine.
