What's the best oil to use?

There honestly is no "best oil" out there but there are lots of good choices. The LS1 and LT1 engine tend to like an oil that is near the top of the 30wt range, to the bottom of the 40wt range. So something in around 12-13cst at 100c, give or take 1cst, will work well on a hard driven car. If you don't drive it too hard, then just about any oil will do. (but I know most people on here drive very hard)

I was reading one of Patman's posts, and he said that Mobil 1 0-40 would be one of the best oils to use for this engine, so that's what i've been using ever since!! Switching from Mobil 1 10-30 to 0-40 Really helped my oil pressure, and i'm sure protects better, cuz he said it should, and he knows his ****!

[QUOTE=NOBR8KSS] Sorry for the confusion. When you look at the technical data sheet on an oil, they will give it's viscosity at 40C and at 100C. In order for an oil to be a 30wt oil (such as 0w30, 5w30, 10w30) it must be between 9.3 to 12.5 cst at 100C. To be a 40wt oil (such as 0w40, 5w40, 10w40, 15w40) it's viscosity has to be between 12.5 to 16.3 cst at 100C. The first number is determined by it's performance in the cold cranking tests. Lower numbers means the oil flows better in these tests.
So when I say the LS1 likes an oil of around 12-13 cst at 100c, this means it likes a thicker 30wt to lower 40wt oil. Every situation is slightly different though, because if you run hotter oil temps then you need something slightly thicker. If you don't drive super hard very often, you can get away with something slightly thinner. This is why oil analysis is such a key role in picking the right oil for your particular needs.
