LS1 vs LS2 position sensors info
I have read that the LS2 cam position sensor is in the front timing cover and the LS1 is in the rear. What I couldn't find is if there is a difference in the cam itself? I assume there is, but most cams I found forsale say LS1 or LS2. Are the cams themselves the same? Maybe that wasn't clear. If I buy a comp cam from an LS2, can i drop it right into my LS1 without changing anything?

The cams can be ran by both ls1 and ls2 regardless of the can sensor (rear of block or front timing cover)...usually ls2 cams have more duration bc of the increase in cubes (+18) but you can still run them in an ls1 with good intake and heads

LS1 cam can go into an LS2 but an LS2 cam can not go into an LS1. The LS1 cam has a cam gear built into the back of the cam for the rear cam positioning sensor. the LS2 cam has no gear and cannot be used in an LS1.

Huh? Any 3-bolt LS cam will work in any LS motor. The only deciding factor is the timing gear, and he already has the correct one. Disregarding crap like VVT and DOD, you could put a 1997 cam in a 2011 engine if you wanted to just by swapping the top gear.

LS1 style cam: CMP reluctor is machined into cam just in front of the rear bearing journal, it provides a 1x signal.
LS2 style cam: CMP reluctor is the cam sprocket which is shaped to produce either a 1x signal or a 4x signal.
To run with your LS1 PCM you need the CMP reluctor that produces the 1x signal.
To run a LS2 style cam, you need the 1x cam sprocket (which comes only in 3-bolt flavor) which means you are restricted to 3-bolt cams, and you also need a CMP extension harness and front cover.
See attached image (which I borrowed from ls1tech).

The Camshaft sensor determines which cylinder is firing to establish injector synchronization and coil firing sequence in DIS systems. Crankshaft sensors set ignition timing, supply the RPM signal, and determine engine speed.
