Default Engine knocking/tapping

Is there anyone that can help me out with this. On start up my engine knocks/taps. It does not go away until the car has been driven for a period of time and after you get on it. I had it taken to the dealership where i purchased it and they replaced the lifters on bothsides, but the noise is still there. Its a 02 Z28 with 18,700 miles on it. PLEASE HELP???

Eh....Sounds like piston slap to me, join the club. Do a search on it here you will find pages of posts about it. I don't know why i'm the first one to answer this 95% of the people on here knew what you were talking about without even opening this thread. Do the search get some info and go back to the dealer and explain what you found and if you are VERY VERY lucky they will right GM's wrong. I can't believe they actually pulled the heads and replaced thr lifters!!!! Good luck... you'll need it!!

I would talk to Loraine Ext.58226 about my case and compare it to yours.
My Service Number 1-176613812.
She called me again today. She's very polite to talk to.

If you look it up tell me what they found when they took mine apart and sent it to the machine shop. They would not even tell my GM Tech and he is not a happy camper!

Thanks! I'll wait to hear from you.
Yes my tech was upset at the fact he was trying to do the right thing and wanted to know how bad the cylinders were out of spec, and what they would do to balance the engine if they were not going to replace it because he said if the cylinders were out of spec as he suspects the noise will just return over time. The piston slap was not bad until around 11k-12k miles and then it sounded like a diesel so they decided to go with the cheaper route of putting the pistons and rings in it. They didn't even replace the bearings while they tore it down that far! They had the GM tech remove the engine and send it to a machine shop. They did not send it to the shop that we agreed upon. When the block came back my GM tech was not allowed to ask any questions and was only allowed to put it back into my car.
Like I stated...he was not happy about that.

Thanks for looking into it and hopefully you will get your fixed as well.

pssthey-

Did you get your car looked at?

Mine is in the shop now for paint bubbles in the roof panel. Should be done early next week.

I've put roughly 2500 miles on my car now and I too am experiencing the infamous piston slap. I couldn't really hear it when I first bought the car but we've had a cold spell since then along with some more mileage on it. I'm calling in the morning to set up an appointment with the service center to have it looked at. My extended warranty says that it covers internal engine components... I'm assuming they would cover piston slap?

I just hope the dealership takes their time to find the exact cause of the problem and attempt to fix it instead of giving me a hard time about it. There are several Pontiac places in the area I could always take it to until I find someone that will.

BTW... I read the other post in this forum about the legal firm that's has the suit again GM for piston slap. I don't mean to sound like an *** and seem like I'm just trying to get something for free. The tapping sound seems to be pretty loud compared to descriptions that I've read online. I can hear it cruising through 2nd and 3rd gear w/ the radio off from inside the car. It has a slight diesel sound to it. I'd rather have someone else take a look at it and see if they can determine the urgency for having it repaired IF it needs to be

The knocking sound is a nightmare. These two sites have some pretty good info on it: www.gmproblems.com and www.pistonslap.com They'll at least give you some ideas about what you can do.
