Default Short block questions.

As most of you know....blew my motor saturday afternoon.

Here is my battle plan so far:
Fulltime race gas motor.
346 or 347 cid forged internals
High compression pistons 12 to 1 or better.
200-300 shot of nitrous (direct port through an LSX intake)
Must work with my new heads (PP Stage 2 5.3's)

Now here are my questions on how to spec this motor:
1. Do I need a forged crank (assuming I can hit 800hp on juice)
2. Will I have reliabilty problems with such a high compression ratio?
3. If I select domed pistons with reliefs, can I go with a bigger cam then my new 231/237 from TSP?

I plan on upgrading to an LS1 Speed complete fuel system, a FAST LS1 system. As you can see from my signature, I have a full drag suspension, with all the best toys. My goal will be to run mid 9's without having to freshen the motor every year. The car will see the track 6 or 7 times per year, and have some weekend street duties. It's just a toy, and I don't need it for work, or to get groceries.

What should I do? How should I spec the motor? Any advice, help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to stay positive over losing my low mile original motor (14,400 miles w/ only 4-5 bottles of nitrous run through it)

TIA===Jason aka Fast SS.

You seem ok on everything except for the crank. You don't want to use a forged crank with nitrous. It stands a better chance of breaking. Typically a nitrous motor will use a cast or a nitrous grind crank which has some flex to it.

I have a complete Lunati 382 rotating assembly sitting in my room. I am having second thoughts about using it in the near future. If you would be interested in it for your build up, pm me. Good luck with what ever you choose.

I'm looking at a similar setup to you, FastSS. I'd spend the big money on the Rods and Pistons, and just make sure the crank is in good shape. My stock shortblock is starting to go slowly and I'll be doing a 347 rebuild. If all you want is 12.1 compression you shouldn't have any trouble reaching that w/ a custom piston and still have plenty of Piston To Valve Clearance

My planned Shortblock is....

LS1 block honed out, and a stock "treated" crank.
Oliver Billet Connecting Rods
Custom Diamond Pistons
ARP Main Studs
Clevite Bearings
Billet Mains

The Top end will be
AFR Heads CNC and Hand ported or Stage 2 LS6 Heads
Solid Roller Conversion
Big *** Solid Roller Cam
11.5:1 compression
Big shot of nawwwwwwwwwwwwwwz
