i dont see why not, it might not run perfect depending on mods but it should start right up to be able to check for leaks. i would reccomend pulling the fuel pump fuse first toss some oil around and listen for overly wrong sounds. then put the fuse back in and fire her up

I guess if they start engines on the dyno with no tranny you should be fine.

I've never had the opportunity to try it though so I'm not 100%.

I did... Just make sure to take your clutch master off of the clutch pedal first if it is an m6! Good way to make a mess and spend extra $!

Since It's an a4 you will need to be sure the car "sees" park or neutralby possibly adjusting your switch that slides over the shift lever, plus be sure you don't have a wire loom hanging anywhere near the flex plate

People have started engines for years on stands. I would have the flywheel securely attatched and all wires/lines out of the way. IF you plan on not digging into engine again, fill with fluids and bleed the system.

Yes. Same idea as if the tranny were installed. If it's not in neutral or part, it won't start. On an engine stand it doesn't matter because the wiring harness (if one is used) is a stand-alone unit and doen't have a neutral/park safety switch. In the car, you have to make the computer happy in order for the car to start.

I wouldnt rev on it though. Friend of mine revved on his when his trans was out and a couple hundred miles after he put the trans in the car spun a bearing. Maybe having no load on the motor overspun a bearing? I could be wrong though.
