ls1 383 stroker build
I'm pulling my stock LS1 out of my 99 M6 transam and going to be rebuilding it into a budget 383 stroker. Right now i'm going to build the bottom end and then later do the top end.
Looking for a good 383 stroker/rebuild kit and a good stroker cam. It will be an NA motor with no power adders. I'm looking to build a bottom end that will hold 650hp at the Fly and loads of torque thus why i'm going with the 383. I'm trying to build the elusive 500+ rwhp NA motor that runs on pump gas but right now just the bottom end. The car is a sunday driver so it needs to be sorta street-able but not a daily driver. looking at about 3000 miles a year on the car so it can be on the aggressive side and I would love a rough lobbie idle like my old carb'd motors.
The car has all stock internals so I need a good rebuild kit with new oil pump, timing chain, gaskets, biggest cam I can use with the stock heads, and of course the stroker kit. I will need new bearings as well. The crank will be a 24x.
I'm going to have the block professionally honed to 3.905" bore and the standard 4" stroke for the 383 bottom end.
Any suggestions on complete packages for what I want to do? It looks like texas speed sells a new short block with everything I need for $3900 but i'm trying to do it for less then buying a new bottom end.

Thunder racing put my package together, used callies crank, callies compstar rods, mahle pistons, raptor cam, 236/242/ .617/.619 111, 215 afr heads, 92mm fast intake, n.w. throttle body, and everything to go along with it ran me 6400, I'll have to check the recipt to make sure, since I did a motor swap into my 240sx I think there's some items not needed for the engine build. made 497rwhp through a t56, and 4.10 gears, no nitrous, had a machine shop do honing and balancing, degreeing, had rings cut for nitrous, was about 900.

When I did mine I had diamond pistons, Callie's rods, and a Manley crank. Cam specs were 239/248 .640/.629 114+4. It was a auto with stock 241 heads that made 453/432 on motor and 640/580 through direct port. Ran 10's and trapped 132mph with lowering springs and ccw's on.

youre not going to hit 500whp with stock heads, regardless of how big a cam you put in it
Talk to a site sponsor about your goals, theyll set you in the right direction. Tsp has rolling assemblies for 383's for a good price, and they can help you later on down the road when your ready to start the topend

Not to thread jack but I have a question on the build, I keep reading that the ls1 block needs "clearenced" to accept the 4in stroke, but what does that mean exactly? How much (ballpark) extra would a machine shop charge to do this? Does a ls6 block require the same clearancing?

If your brave enough to stick the 90 in there you can do the notching yourself....just take your time, I did it on a few Honda engines to fit larger H beam rods and had no problems.

500 NA RWHP will be hard to make with GM heads.

I"m going to switch out the heads eventually. But do to the cost of doing this I'm going to start with the bottom end and work my way up. going to the bottom end first and the the top end second but i want to keep the car running as long as possible. it's only a sunday driver but I do enjoy my sunday drives in it!
on a side not still nothing back from Texas speed. Speed Inc got back to me with a price in a few hours.
