Default Just installed Cam

Hey all,

Just finished the install of a 225/ .581/ 113+1 cam, jesel shaft mount rockers, dual springs w/ ti retainers, ls6 oil pump, adj. timing chain, and pushrods. I started the motor, built oil pressure and idled. I shut it off as soon as I got pressure after about 6 secs. I shut it off right away because it was "ticking" real loud. After pulling a valve cover (where it sounded like it was coming from) and looking things over (plenty of oil in/on the cover/head) I restarted it. Still idles fine but the sound is still there, it literally sounds like a sewing machine running on diesel. after keeping oil pressure, running it up to temp it still had no noticeable reduction in sound. I drove it around the neighborhood, ran fine, idles fine, still the noise.

Now, I parked the car after the drive and tried starting it but it wont fire.

I was thinking it was flooded? It smells of gas so I left it for an hour and it still wont fire.

Any ideas on the sound? lifters bottoming out? springs at bind?

Did you replace the lifters? And if so with what... Ls engines do make a sewing machine sound... A good quality video would help

Maybe the wrong pushrod length? Also, you may have a hard time starting it because it needs to be tuned. Just a guess.

did you give it a little gas when you start it? you need to open the tb a lil but to get more air in the engine, i know that was with me after my cam install before i got the ecu tuned to the cam specs

What lifters are you running? How much preload did you setup on them? In general when I first started my car it was really loud in the engine bay but quieted down dramatically after 10 seconds.

they're the stock lifters. i plan on switching out to 317 heads and good lifters and running turbo eventually so I didnt want to pull the heads off.
From other threads/forums the sound is generally from the lifters not pumping up and low oil pressure from a pinched oil pump seal. But, I did have about 40 psi on idle and about 50psi when driving. If I can get it started in the next hour I will try and post a video.

I'm running 7.4 pushrods, Speed Inc. said I would be fine using that length. BTW, its their TU1 cam.

Got it started right when I got home after sitting overnight. Took a video instantly. Still idling with about 40 psi oil pressure. Rockers are NOT hitting the covers, which was my first thought.

I shut it off right away. I'd like to get some idea of, if any engine damage would be occurring... too much fuel and just need a tune??

Just went out pulled the valve cover again, rotated the motor and you could hear a sucking sound coming from cylinder 6. i didn't turn the motor over far enough to check any other cylinders. Gas or Oil? valve seals? What explains the ticking? too much fuel? I'm confident I installed the seals correctly.

Dumping fuel? Obviously I need a computer tune but will that cure it?

No, replacing the injectors would require a computer tune. Stock injectors on untuned pcm. I was hoping I could get by for awhile on stock tune. I don't know if the sound its making is from the lifters or something.

Any ideas? lifters? tune? I was hoping it would learn itself out and be somewhat manageable. I'm extremely confident it is timed right. Rollmaster single adj. chain installed per their instructions.

my cam car makes the same sound kinda, the engines just get louder wen you install a cam, as to the problem to not staying on, you might just need a tune.

It seems wayyyy too loud. The sewing machine, ticking, diesel sound almost drowns out the exhaust. I'm gunna try pulling the power from the motor/computer and see if that "restarts" any of the parameters already learned into the computer

How many miles on the lifters? In general there is suppose to be a certain amount of preload on lifters for example on my ls7 lifters the require around .080. Because if theres not enough preload like you have here, you have valvetrain chatter. I dont know what stocks are suppose to be at, but if you think what all you have done far as milling the heads, add that total amount to the difference in compressed gasket thickness (if you were running one) and add both of these differences together. So the amount taken off the heads and add the difference in gaskets. Then subtract those 2 numbers from your stock pushrod length and whatever that comes out to be should be your pushrod length with the same amount of preload you had from stock. I hope this helps, or try finding out the stock preload and work from there.

Thanks Austin. Ill calculate all that out. I was told by speed inc to order their 7.4 pushrods with their cam but Ill double check. The motor was never opened as far as I know. It had 30k on it and I put an additional 5k since I got it.

Edit: Re-read your post. The heads have never been off so they havent been milled and stock head gaskets..... Ill check for preload. How much spring is too much spring for stock lifters??

Adjustable rockers? Sounds like there not adusted correctly or your pushrods are not the right length.

Pull off a vavle cover and see if you have any vavle lash.....then look for marks on the vale cover as well.
